R. H. Anderson

USMA 1857

Robert Houstoun Anderson resigned his commission as a second lieutenant with the 9th U.S. Infantry on 17 May 1861, and entered the Confederate Artillery as a 1st Lieutenant.

Colonel Edward Bird

5th Georgia Cavalry

He  entered service in Apr. 1861 as Captain of Company A, Squadron B, Georgia Cavalry.  Captain Bird was promoted to Lt. Colonel on 17 May 1862, and took command of the 2nd Battalion. 

Lt. Colonel Bird transferred to  5th GA. Cav. In 1864, he was promoted and took command of the 5th Georgia Cavalry.

Augustus Lewis  Cowart was born June 15, 1832, and died August 29, 1910 in Emanuel County, GA.

Alexander Baillie Kell

3rd Lt. McIntosh Light Dragoons

Pvt. Company H. 5th GA. Cav.

Alexander Baillie Kell is a brother of Captain John McIntosh Kell, Executive officer of the C.S.S. Alabama. Many of A. B. Kell's letters are posted on this web site.

John David Cay

Company G (Liberty Independent troop)

John David Cay was captured on December 14, 1864, by Captain Hancock’s Company, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry, with others of a Liberty Troop Remount Detachment, at his father’s home in Walthourville, Georgia.

Eli Wesley Wilson

Company I (Effingham Hussars)

Son of Elihu WILSON & Katherine TULLIS, was born 5 Dec 1833 in Effingham County, and died 4 Oct 1913 in Washington County, Georgia. He enlisted as 4th Sergeant on 17 Sep 1861 at Savannah Georgia, in the Effingham Hussars.

Martin Abraham MARTIN

Company D

A son of William H. MARTIN and Elizabeth DANIEL, was born abt. 1830 in Liberty County, Georgia. He enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 8 Oct 1861. Private MARTIN was appointed bugler.  He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863.

Chaplain David H. PORTER

5th Georgia Cavalry Command

He was pastor to the First Presbyterian Church of Savannah, Georgia. During the summer of 1861, he began preaching to the Confederate garrison at Fort Pulaski and in the fall of 1863, Porter became chaplain of the 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, retaining this position until the war’s end. David H. PORTER, son of Francis H. PORTER, was born in Selma, Alabama in 1830.

Samuel Spencer MARTIN

Company D

A son of William H. MARTIN and Elizabeth DANIEL, was born in Liberty County, Georgia, on 15 Feb 1838, and died in Liberty County 26 Sep 1914. He is buried at Taylors Creek Cemetery, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Lt. Colonel Richard J. DAVANT, Jr.

Command Staff 5th Georgia Cavalry

He enlisted as 1st Lieutenant of the Georgia Hussars on 23 Nov 1861. He was appointed acting Adjutant of Company B, Squadron B on 5 Dec 1861. Company B, Squadron B subsequently became Company D, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. Lieutenant Davant was defeated at reorganization on 9 May 1862. He was promoted to Major and assigned to the Field and Staff as Adjutant on 17 May 1862. He served on the Board of Examiners in Savannah for most of 1862. This detail by order 187 of General Mercer.
