Captain Henry Jacob STROBHAR entered service on 7 Sep 1861 at Savannah, Georgia. Records show he was a 1st Lieutenant at Camp Lawton serving as post Acting Quartermaster on duty in Brigadier General A. R. LAWTON'S Brigade, Department of Georgia. He was elected Captain of the "Effingham Hussars", Company A, 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion.  The Effingham Hussars became Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Captain STROBHAR was wounded in the left leg on 20 June 1864, during a cavalry charge at Noon Day Church, Cobb County, Georgia. Records show he was sent to a Confederate Hospital in Atlanta and then transferred to Floyd House and Ocmulgee Hospitals in Macon, Georgia.  He returned to duty. Captain Strobhar was paroled at Savannah, Georgia, on 9 May 1865. 1st Lieutenant James J. BREWER, son of George W. BREWER & Penelope ELKINS, entered service as a  2nd Lieutenant on 7 Sep 1861, at Savannah Georgia.  Twenty-four year old James is found in his fathers household in the 1860 Effingham County census. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant  20 May 1862. Company A  became Company I,  5th Regiment Georgia Calvary on 20 Jan 1863. He was surrendered  26 Apr 1865, at Greensboro North Carolina. 2nd Lieutenant John David GROOVER, son of David GROOVER and Hannah SHEAROUSE, was born in Effingham County on 20 Mar 1830. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 7 Sep 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. He was elected Jr. 2nd Lieutenant on 10 Oct 1861, and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 20 May 1862.  He transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. John David Groover married Elvira C. DAVIS, daughter of Richard DAVIS and Elizabeth PORTER, on 20 Dec 1848, in Effingham County. He died 30 Sep 1913 and is buried at Laurel Hill Lutheran Church Cemetery, Effingham County, Georgia. [MIL REC - GALLANT - GSAF 149]

2nd Lieutenant John N. GRIMES

Jr. 2nd Lieutenant Joseph A. RAHN, son of Cletus RAHN and Eliza Hannah RAHN, was born 10 Feb 1834 in Effingham County, Georgia, and died 1 Oct 1876.  He married Harriet WYLLY, daughter of Frederick R. WYLLY and Sarah Lewis COOPER, on 8 Jan 1861. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 7 Sep 1861. He was elected 1st sergeant on 10 Oct 1861. He was elected Jr. 2nd Lieutenant on 22 May 1862. He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Jr. 2nd Lieutenant W. T. GIBSON was wounded in the left elbow at the battle of Noonday Church.

1st Sergeant Eli Wesley WILSON was born 5 Dec 1833 in Effingham County, and died 4 Oct 1913 in Washington County, Georgia. He enlisted as 4th Sergeant on 17 Sep 1861 at Savannah Georgia, in the Effingham Hussars. Eli was promoted  2nd Sergeant on 24 May 1862. On 20 Jan 1863  Company A  became Company I,  5th  Regiment Georgia Calvary, and Eli was elected 1st Sergeant on 1  Sep 1863. He was later appointed Ordinance Sergeant, but was reduced to the rank of Private on 6 Jul 1864. During the Savannah campaign he was detailed as a guide for Gen IVERSON.  Pension records state he was on "special detail" near Greensboro, North Carolina and  his horse "became lame and was unable to follow company at time of surrender". 1st Sergeant S. H. OLIVER

1st Sergeant Harlan P. BREWER, son of George W. BREWER & Penelope ELKINS, enlisted as a 2nd Corporal on September 7, 1861, at Savannah Georgia. Twenty-two year old H. P. is found in his fathers household in the 1860 Effingham County Census.  He was appointed 1st Corporal  October 10, 1861, elected 3rd Sergeant 8 May 1862, unit became Company I, 5th Regiment Georgia Calvary on January 20, 1863,  to Private May 28, 1863, and was later promoted to 1st Sergeant.  [FAM REC - 1860 EFF CEN  12th Dist: Egypt   REEL NO:  M653-120  PAGE NO:  7 VISIT 50]

1st Sergeant Nesbit R. MORGAN, son of James W. MORGAN and Sarah Dorothy RYALL, was born 16 Oct 1844 in Effingham County, Georgia, and died 16 Apr 1900. Nineteen year old Nesbit is listed in his mother's household (visit 99) in the 1860 Effingham County census. He enlisted in Company D, 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion, in Aug 1861. He transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on January 20, 1863.  He was promoted to 1st Sergeant and surrendered when the war ended  April 1865. He married  (1) Jerutha H. 1st Sergeant Fredrick Phillip HORNING enlisted as a 4th Sergeant in Company E, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 1 Mar 1862 at savannah, Georgia.  He was promoted to 1st sergeant in June, 1862. He transferred to Company A on 1 Sep 1862. He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865. 2nd Sergeant David Haupt DASHER, son of Benjamin DASHER, Jr. and Elisabeth LIMEBERGER, was born 30 Oct 1829 in Effingham County. David enlisted as a 3rd Corporal in Effingham Hussars on 10 Oct 1861. He was promoted to 1st Corporal on 8 May 1861, and to 4th Sergeant on 24 May 1862. David transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. David was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on 28 May 1863, and to 2nd Sergeant on 1 Sep 1863. He was listed as present on the last roll dated Dec  1864. He married first Maria Permilia HEIDT, and second Laura A. MALLETTE. Thirty year old David is found living alone in the 1860 census. 5th  Sergeant Henry Lewis FOY, son of George FOY and Ann Rebecca DASHER, was born in Effingham County, Georgia, on 1 May 1832. He enlisted as a private in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 7 Sep 1861, at Tybee Island, Georgia. He was elected 3rd corporal on 8 May 1862. He was promoted to 5th  sergeant on 24 May 1862.  Henry transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was appointed 4th sergeant on  1 Sep 1863. He was on a detail at Union Springs, Alabama at the Convalescent Horse Camp on 1 Sep 1864. He surren­dered under Major General Sam Jones at Tallahassee, Florida on 10 May 1865. Henry Lewis FOY married Mary E. POWERS (widow of M. H. POWERS) on 1 Nov 1857. The 1860 census (visit 273) lists Henry and Mary as wealthy farmers. 5th Sergeant M. L. (S.) ARCHER, is listed in the 1860 census as being a 26 year old mill hand.  He enlisted as a private 7 Sep 1861 at Savannah, Georgia. He was elected 4th corporal on 8 May 1862.  He was promoted to 2nd corporal on 24 May 1862. Corporal Archer transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was appointed 1st corporal in June, 1863, and then to 5th sergeant on 1 Sep 1863. He was captured at the battle at Bear Creek Station on 16 Nov 1864. 1st Corporal John Norwood GRIMES enlisted in Company B, 8th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, on 21 May 1861. He was admitted to C.S.A. General Hospital at Charlottesville, Virginia, on 25 Sep 1861, with dyspepsia. He was furloughed from there on 4 Oct 1861 for 30 days. He was discharged from service on 9 Dec 1861. John enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 1 Apr 1862, at Savannah, Georgia.  He was elected 3rd corporal on 8 May 1862 and was promoted to 1st corporal on 24 May 1862. He was transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863.

2nd Corporal Edwin R. WALDHAUER, son of John WALDHAUER and Christina GNANN, enlisted as a private in Company A, 2nd GA Battalion Cavalry, on 7 Sep 1861. He transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry 20 Jan 1863. He was appointed 2nd Corporal on 28 May 1863 and then to 1st Corporal. Records show him Listed as missing since the action on 20 Jun 1864 (Noon Day Church). Found on roll of Prisoners of War, as captured at Kennesaw Mountain on 18 June 1864 and later as 20 Jun 1864. He was forwarded to Camp Douglas from Louisville Military Prison 17 Jul 1864, and received at Camp Douglas, Ill, 18 Jul 1864. Records list him "as died at Camp Douglas", Chicago, Ill, on 27 Dec 1864. He was buried in grave # 331, block 2, Chicago City Cemetery.  Morgan reports he witnessed Corporal being captured when a Yankee soldier pulled his horse down by the rains during the last charge at Noonday Church.

3rd Corporal George William GROVENSTEIN, son of Henry Lewis GROVENSTEIN, was born 5 Mar 1829. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 7 Sep 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. He was elected 3rd Corporal on 24 May 1862. George transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Corporal Grovenstein was detailed to the Convalescent Horse Camp at Union Springs, Alabama, on 8 Aug 1864. George William married Cornelia Naomi METZGER on 6 Feb 1850. 3rd Corporal Daniel Green MORGAN, son of William I. MORGAN and Christianna Elizabeth HEIDT, was born in Effingham County in Dec 1836,and he died 17 Nov 1923.  Twenty-two year old Daniel Green is found living in his fathers household in the 1860 Effingham County Census. He married Virginia L. SHEAROUSE on 14 Oct 1865. Daniel Green is buried at Turkey Branch Methodist Church in Effingham County, Georgia. [GSAF -

4th Corporal Burton "Bee" Berrian GRIFFIN, son of Sheppard and Mary GRIFFIN, was born in Effingham County, Georgia, on 13 Dec 1841. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 7 Sep 1861.  Burton transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was promoted to 3rd Corporal in Oct 1863. Corporal Griffin was reduced in rank to private on 20 Apr 1864. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865. Burton died on 26 Apr 1923, and is buried at Griffin Cemetery, Effingham County, Georgia. Bee married  Francis BREWER. [MIL REC - GALLANT]

4th Corporal James Franklin BERRY, son of John Banaja BERRY and Mary A. METZGER, was born 23 Feb 1829, in Effingham County, Georgia. He enlisted 17 Sep 1861 at Savannah, Georgia, and was promoted 4th Corporal on 24 May 1862. Corporal Berry transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865.  James Franklin Berry married Amelia WILSON on 3 Feb 1861. Corporal Berry died 11 Dec 1895, in Effingham County. Private Joshua Christopher SHEAROUSE (Company Farrier), son of Emanuel SHEAROUSE and Elizabeth MILLER,  was born May 12, 1838 in Effingham County, Georgia, and died September 07, 1901.  He married Emma Philisia DASHER 14 Nov 1860.  She was born 22 Dec 1837 in Effingham County, Georgia.  Children of JOSHUA SHEAROUSE and EMMA DASHER are: 1. James BIRD, son of William BIRD and Marie BARTHELMESS,  enlisted as a private in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Calvary on May 15, 1862 at Savannah, Georgia.  Twenty-seven year old James is found in the 1860 Effingham County Census with a Springfield, Georgia  address. James S. BEVILL
was born in 1835. He is listed in the 1860 Effingham County, Georgia census as a 25 year old farmhand. He enlisted as a private in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 9 Dec 1861, at Savannah, Georgia.  He was discharged 25 Jun 1862, due to physical disability. He enlisted in Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 13 Aug 1863, at the Isle of Hope, Georgia.  He deserted and reported to the office of the U.S. Provost Marshall at Savannah, Georgia, on 3 April 1865.  He took the oath of allegiance to the U. S. Government. He died in 1892 and is buried at the Guyton City cemetery, Guyton, Georgia.

Robert BEVILL is listed as a ten year old male in the home of Claiborne and Ann BEVILL in the 1850 Effingham County census.

W. L. BEVILL enlisted on 14 Jul 1862 at Savannah, Georgia, as a substitute for J. W. Lee. He was detailed as company teamster on 8 Nov 1862.  W. L. Bevill was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. The company roll for Dec 1864, last on file, lists him as being present. [MIL REC - GALLANT]

Keeland S. BLITCH enlisted as 3rd Sergeant on 4 Mar 1862 in Company I, 11th Battalion at Camp Davis near Guyton, Georgia. He transferred as 2nd  Sergeant when unit became Company I of the 47th Regiment on 12 May 1862. Keeland M. Blitch was discharged because of physical disability on 15 Jun 1862, enlisted as Private in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Calvary on 22 Aug 1863 at Isle of Hope near Savannah Georgia, listed as absent without leave on 25 Nov 1864. Keeland was born in 1827, possibly the older brother of Martha P. BLITCH, wife of Paul Allen TULLIS. , son of George W. BREWER & Penelope ELKINS, enlisted on 1 Apr 1862, at Savannah Georgia. Fifteen year old H. P. is found in his fathers household in the 1860 Effingham County Census. Robert H. BREWER , son of  George W. BREWER & Penelope ELKINS,  was in the Militia Enrollment List of  1863, enlisted  May 15, 1864 at Savannah Georgia in Company I, 5th Regiment  Georgia Calvary.  Thirteen year old R. H. is found in his fathers household in the 1860 Effingham County census. He was born April 22, 1847; died September 21, 1900. Robert H. James T. BURNS enlisted on 1 mar 1863, as a substitute for R. M. Rieves. He transferred to Company I, 47th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, on 2 Mar 1863. He was captured at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, on 25 Nov 1863. He was sent to Rock Island, Illinois on 9 Dec 1863. He took an oath of allegiance to the U.S. Government and was released for exchange on October 31, 1864. He surrendered under Major General Sam Jones at Tallahassee, Florida, on 11 May 1865. James Dasher, son of John DASHER and Mary MILLER, was born in Effingham County, Georgia, on 16 Jan 1830. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia cavalry, on 11 Oct 1861, at Tybee Island, Georgia. He is listed as being in Guyton General Hospital at Guyton, Georgia, in Oct 1863. He is found on the muster rolls of Company B, 1st Regiment, Troops and Defenses, Macon, Georgia, in Nov & Dec 1864. The Dec 1864 roll for Company I, lists him as absent without leave. Jasper Benjamin DASHER, son of Benjamin DASHER, Jr. and Elizabeth LIMEBERGER, was born 24 Mar 1840, in Effingham County, Georgia.  He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 10 Mar 1862, at Tybee Island. He transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. The roll for June 1864, last one on file, shows him detailed as a cook.  Jasper married Mary A. ZETTLER on 21 Nov 1860. Shadrack Elisha DASHER 

Richard G. DAVIS enlisted 22 Mar 1862, at Savannah, Georgia. He transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Sergeant Davis was listed on Dec 1864 roll as "absent without leave" since 10 Nov 1864. He surrendered under Major General Samuel Jones at Tallahassee, Florida. [MIL REC - GALLANT]

Levi D. EDWARDS enlisted in Company I, 54th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, on 6 May 1862.  He was discharged at Beaulieu, Georgia on 24 Sep 1862. He enlisted in Company I on 19 Oct 1863, at the Isle of Hope, Georgia. private Edwards transferred to Company K, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 16 May 1864.  He surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia, on 9 Apr 1865. Farley S. EDWARDS enlisted as a private in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 17 Sep 1861 at Savannah, Georgia. He transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863.  He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865. He is buried at Laurel Hill Lutheran Church, Clyo, Georgia. John A. EDWARDS enlisted 7 Sep 1861 at Savannah, Georgia. He transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Company roll for Dec 1864,  last on file, lists him as being present. No further record on file. [MIL REC – GALLANT]

John G. EDWARDS enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 5 Aug 1863, at Savannah, Georgia. The company roll for Dec 1864, last on file, lists him as being absent on furlough. No further record on file. [MIL REC – GALLANT]

Levi D. EDWARDS enlisted 24 Sep 1862, in Company I, 54th  Georgia Regiment. He was discharged at Beaulieu near Savannah, Georgia 24 Sep 1862 . He then enlisted as a private in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry October 19, 1863 . Levi then transferred to Co. K, 7th  Regiment Georgia Cavalry on 16 May 1864 . Levi surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia on 9  Apr 1865. Levi D Edwards died in Chatham County, Georgia on 25 Jun 1919. [GSU-PEN - HEN]

Paul M. EDWARDS enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 11 Mar 1862, at Savannah, Georgia. He transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. PAUL MARLOW EDWARDS, son of S. A. & TABITHA EDWARDS, was born in Effingham County, Georgia, 14 Sept 1842. He married ANNIE E. SMETS on 25 NOV 1874. James Jonathan EXLEY, son of Solomon EXLEY and Sarah BACKLEY, was born 1 Apr 1819. He married Susannah Amelia EXLEY on 29 Sep 1852. He enlisted on 28 Jul 1863 at the Isle of Hope, Georgia. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, 26 April 1865. 15 Jun 1886, and is buried at Laurel Hill Lutheran Church, Effingham County, Georgia. George Washington FETZER, son of Richard I. FETZER and Salome KIEFFER, was born 29 Dec 1844, and died 17 May 1930. Fifteen year old George is listed in his fathers household in the 1860 Effingham County Census.  He enlisted and was was appointed 1st Corporal of Company C, 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade, Georgia State Troops 18 Sep 1861 . Mustered out 18 Mar 1862 . He then enlisted as a private in Company I, 54th Regiment Ga. Infantry on 6 May 1862 , and was appointed Corporal. He was again discharged at Beaulieu, Georgia, 15 Oct 1862 . On 7 Nov 1862 he enlisted as a private in  Company A, 2nd Battalion,  Georgia Cavalry and transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia regiment on 20 Jan 1863). George W. FETZER Surrendered at Hillsboro, N. C. 26 Apr 1865. He married Laura Eliza HEIDT 1 Dec 1870. John A. FEUGER

Dougald FERGUSON enlisted as 3rd Corporal on 31 May 1861, in the 2nd Republican Blues, Chatham County, for 60 days. Dougald enlisted as a private in Company C, 1st Regiment Georgia Infantry (Olmstead's), on 20 Aug 1861, and transferred to Company A, 2d Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 1 Dec 1862.  He was transferred to Company  I, 5th Regiment Ga. R. W. FLAKE enlisted as a private in Company F, 54th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, on 27 Nov 1872. He was discharged by civil authority at Beaulieu near Savannah, Georgia, on 4 Nov 1862. He enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 1 Jan 1864, at Green Pond, South Carolina. The company roll for Dec 1864, last on file, lists him as present. No further record. William A. FLAKE enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 30 Jun 1862, at Savannah, Georgia. He was transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863.  The company roll for Dec 1864, last on file, shows him absent, sick in Effingham County, Georgia. No further record. Jacob Lot FRYERMOUTH , son of John Peter FRYERMOUTH and Lydia GNANN, was born in Effingham County on 18 May 1830.  He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 17 Sep 1861, at Savannah, Georgia.  He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was appointed cook in Nov 1863.The company roll for Dec 1864,last on file, lists him as being present. No further record on file. He married Amanda WEITMAN on 29 Jul 1852. Cletus GNANN, son of Jacob GNANN, Jr. and Christina RAHN, was born 27 Feb 1819. He married Mary GUGLE on 29 Jul 1852. He enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 1 Aug 1863 at the Isle of Hope, Georgia. The company roll for Dec 1864, last on file, lists him as detailed to as a clerk at brigade headquarters. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865. Elbert GNANN, son of Jacob GNANN, Jr. and Christina RAHN, was born 13 Mar 1821. He married Salone ARNSDORFF in 1842. Elbert enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 25 Jul 1863, at the Isle of Hope, Georgia. Records show he was listed as Absent without leave on 25 Nov 1864. Fredrick GNANN,  son of Benjamin GNANN and Margaret GNANN, was born in Effingham County, Georgia, on 3 Feb 1822. By 1860 he was a planter owning 44 slaves. He married Mary Ann WILSON, on 12 Mar 1851. She is the daughter of John W. WILSON and Susanna RAHN. Children of Captain Freddy and Mary Ann are: 1. Mary Eliza, b. 17 Jun 1834. 2. John Benjamin, b. 11 Nov 1856. 3. Charles Fredrick, b. 23 Jun 1859. 4. Lillian Gertrude, b. 12 Feb 1870. He enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 15 Sep 1863, near Savannah, Georgia. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865. Fredrick died on 9 Dec 1896. John Andrew GNANN, son of Solomon GNANN and Margaret FETZER, was born in Effingham County, Georgia, on 12 Dec 1833. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 7 Sep 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. He was detailed as a company teamster on 5 Mar 1862.  He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. The company roll for April 1864, last on file, lists him as present, but sick. No further record. He married Caroline E. METZER on 13 Dec 1863. John Andrew Gnann died on 5 Mar 1894. Lewis Christopher GNANN, son of Jacob GNANN and Catherine GNANN, was born on 11 Aug 1825. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 26 Nov 1862, at Savannah, Georgia. He transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He furnished Charles MORTIMER as a substitute on 31 Jan 1863.  He died on 4 May 1913 and is buried at Laurel Hill Lutheran Church, Effingham County, Georgia. [MIL REC - GALLANT - GSAF 113]

William B. GIBBONS enlisted in the Effingham Hussars on 14 Apr 1862.  Private Gibbons transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863.  Records show he transferred to Captain J. W. McKlpin’s Company, Engineer Corps, by order of General Mercer. This company became Company D, 2nd Engineer Troops, C.S.A.  William B. GIBBONS married Annie R. JAUGSTETTER in Savannah, Georgia, on March 18, 1879. Annie R. Gibbons was living at 656 E. 37th Street, Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, in 1929. [GSU-PEN]

James Richard Taylor GRIFFIN, son of Sheppard and Mary GRIFFIN, enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 7 Sep 1861, at Savannah. He was promoted to 3rd Corporal on 10 Oct 1861, and to 1st Corporal in Dec 1861. He was reduced in rank to private in election held on 8 May 1862.  He transferred to company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Luther C. GROOVER, son of Elias GROOVER and Susannah REISER, was born on 27 Feb 1833. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 7 Sep 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. James George Henry GROVENSTEIN, son of Lewis GROVENSTEIN and Keziah Ellen WILSON, was born 17 Jul 1840.  J. G. H. enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 7 Sep 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863.  He was killed in action at Noon Day Church, Georgia, on 20 Jun 1864. He is listed in the household of his father in the 1860 Effingham County Census.  He is a Grandson of “Captain James Wilson and Elizabeth Morgan. John Shadrack  GROVENSTEIN, son of Lewis GROVENSTEIN and Keziah Ellen WILSON, was born 26 Jul 1846.  He enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry in 1863 at Hardeeville, South Carolina.  He was captured at Love Joy Station, Georgia on 16 Nov 1864.  He was sent to Point Lookout, Maryland where he took an oath of allegiance to the U.S. Government and was released on 27 June 1865. Shadrack "Shadrach" GROVENSTEIN, son of Henry Lewis GROVENSTEIN and Hannah DASHER, was born on 29 May 1821. He married Susan Catherine KIEFFER on 5 Apr 1834. He enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 1 Aug 1863, at Savannah, Georgia. Horace S. HEIDT enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 7 Sep 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. He transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He died on 12 Aug 1863 from typhoid fever at Medical College Hospital at Savannah, Georgia. [MIL REC - GALLANT]

James E. HEIDT was born in Effingham County in 1823 and was the son of Matthew Heidt and Hannah Elizabeth Weitman.  He married Ann Rebecca Horning on April 9, 1845 and died March 23, 1900 in Savannah, Georgia. He enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 23 July 1863, at the Isle of Hope, Georgia. He was discharged due to disability on 8 Oct 1863. Records show he was also enlisted in the Captain Davenport's Company, 3rd Brigade, Georgia State troops, Cavalry. He also served as a 2nd Lieutenant in Captain Bacon's Company,

Pharis E. HEIDT enlisted in Company C, 1st Brigade, Georgia State Troops on 18 Sep 1861, for six months. Pharis then enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 21 Apr 1862, at Savannah, Georgia.  He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was captured near Woodbury, Tennessee, on 6 Sep 1864. He was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, where he died of pneumonia on 22 Jan 1865.  He is buried at Camp Chase, Ohio, in grave # 852. Thomas E HELMLY, son of Joshua HELMLY and Salome SECKINGER, was born 20 Aug 1822, in Effingham County, Georgia. He enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 28 July 1863, at Isle of Hope, Georgia. He was admitted to a Savannah, Georgia, hospital on 19 Jan 1865. Thomas married Mary NEASE in Effingham County, Georgia. He died on 23 Jun 1905.

Thomas M. KELLER married Margaret Virginia WISENBAKER on 18 Jan 1848, in Effingham County, Georgia. He and Margaret are found in the 1860 census with a Savannah address (southern Effingham County was listed as Savannah). Thomas enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 17 Sep 1861. William Anderson Keller enlisted as a private 31 May 1861, in  the 2nd Republican Blues, Chatham County. Term of service 60 days. He then enlisted as a private in Company C, 1st Regiment Georgia Infantry (Olmstead's),  20 Aug 1861. William transferred to Captain Claghorn's Company, Chatham Siege Artillery, 4 Mar 1862, and then to Company A, 20th Battalion Georgia Cavalry, on 1  Jun 1862. On 12 Jun 1862 he transferred to Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry.  By special order # 20, he transferred  to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Charles MORTIMER enlisted as a private , Company I, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry 2 Jan 1863. Transferred to Company F, 54th Regiment Georgia Infantry in 1863. He is listed as deserted 2 Feb 1863. Note: The 5th Georgia Cavalry was not an organized unit until 20 Jan 1863. [HEN]

J. S. MONTMOLLIN enlisted on 21 May 1861, in Company B, 8th Regiment "Oglethorpe Light Infantry". He transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry. J. S. was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina April 26, 1865. [HEN]

Alonzo D. MOORE enlisted as a 5th sergeant in Company C, 1st Brigade, Georgia State troops on 18 Sep 1861, for six months. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 17 March 1862 at Savannah, Georgia. This unit became Company I, 5th regiment, Georgia cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Angus P. MOORE enlisted as a private in Company C, 1st Brigade, Georgia State Troops on 18 Sep 1861, for six months. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 17 Mar 1862, at Savannah, Georgia. He was transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He married Mazelia A. TULLIS, daughter of Paul Allen TULLIS and Martha P. BLITCH, abt 1885.

Benjamin Joseph MOREL enlisted in Company I, 25th Regiment, Georgia Infantry on 16 Aug 1861. He transferred to Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia cavalry on 31 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company I, 5th regiment, Georgia cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was discharged by Writ of Habeas Corpus on 9 June 1863. Benjamin enlisted in Company E, 7th Georgia Cavalry on 28 Apr 1864 at Augusta, Georgia. He was captured at Trevilian Station, Virginia on 20 Jun 1864, and was sent to Elmira Prison in New York state on 9 Aug 1864.  He died of small pox on 2 Feb 1865, he is buried at Elmira Prison in grave #1788. John Gindrat MOREL enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 15 May 1862, at savannah , Georgia. He was transferred to Company I, 5th regiment, Georgia cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. MORGAN and Christianna Elizabeth HEIDT, was born in Effingham County in Dec 1836,and he died 17 Nov 1923.  Twenty-two year old Daniel Green is found living in his fathers household in the 1860 Effingham County Census. Daniel enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 17 Sep 1861. He transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. David Boston MORGAN, son of David B. Morgan and Sarah Ann Jackson, was born in Cuthbert, Randolph County, Georgia, on  26 Jan 1845. He enlisted in Company I, 5th regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 27 Oct 1863, in Effingham County, Georgia. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865. Nesbit Ryall MORGAN, son of James W. MORGAN and Sarah Dorothy RYALL, was born 16 Oct 1844 in Effingham County, Georgia, and died 16 Apr 1900. Nineteen year old Nesbit is listed in his mother's household (visit 99) in the 1860 Effingham County census. He enlisted in Company D, 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion, in August 1861. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry at Savannah, Georgia. He transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on January 20, 1863.  He was promoted to 1st Sergeant and surrendered when the war ended  April 1865. He enlisted 10 Aug 1861, in 1st Company B, 25th Regiment, Screven County, "BLACK CREEK VOLUNTEERS."  He was elected 1st Lieutenant 5 May 1862, and resigned due to disability on 22 Sep 1862.  John C. Ferdinand M. PORTER, son of Albert PORTER and Evaline REISER, enlisted  in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 17 Sep 1861 at Savannah, Georgia. He was transferred to Company I, 5th regiment, Georgia cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was sent to GUYTON General Hospital, Guyton, Georgia on 20 Feb 1864. No further record on file. , son of Milton H. and Mary E. POWERS, married Fanny K. DASHER. Eight year old Arzada is listed in his fathers household in the 1850 Effingham County Census. In the 1860 census sixteen year old Arzada is listed in the household of Henry L. FOY. Arzada K. Powers is listed as a Corporal in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry.

Alonzo K. POWERS was born 12 Jul 1843. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 7 Sep 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was elected 4th corporal on 10 Oct 1861. He was reduced in rank to private at an election held on 8 May 1862. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina on 26 Apr 1865.  He died on 20 Oct 1910, and is buried at the Springfield City Cemetery, Springfield, Georgia. Hugh O. POWERS enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 26 Apr 1962 at Savannah, Georgia. He was discharged by Writ of Habeas Corpus on 5 Sep 1862. RAHN household in the 1860 Effingham County census. He enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 3 Feb 1863 at Savannah, Georgia. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1864. Robert M. REAVES
enlisted in Company A, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 1 Jan 1862, at Savannah, Georgia. He was appointed company quartermaster on 15 July 1862. He furnished J. M. LEE as a substitute for the month of Jul 1862. He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He furnished James T. Burns as a substitute on 1 Mar 1863. Ephriam SECKINGER, son of Joshua SECKINGER and Salome NEASE, was born on 19 Jan 1820, in Effingham County, Georgia. He enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 28 Jul 1963, at the Isle of Hope, Georgia. He was on detail at Union Springs, Alabama with convalescent horse camp on 8 Aug 1864.  He surrendered under Major General Sam Jones at Tallahassee, Florida, and was paroled at Albany, Georgia, on 6 May 1865. He died on 22 Jun 1905, and is buried at Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Effingham County, Georgia.

Henry E. SECKINGER enlisted in Company A, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 1 Nov 1862, at Tybee, Island. William Robert SECKINGER, son of Gottlieb Seckinger and Mary Weitman was born in Effingham County, Georgia, on 30 May 1822. He enlisted in Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 1 Aug 1863 at the Isle of Hope, Georgia. He was captured during Wheeler's Tennessee Raid near Woodbury, Tennessee, on 6 Sep 1964. He was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio.  William died on 2 Oct 1904, and is buried at Jerusalem Lutheran Church Cemetery, Effingham County, Georgia.

John Emanuel SHEAROUSE, son of Nathaniel SHEAROUSE and Sarah E. ARNSDORFF, was born in Effingham County, Georgia on 11 Apr 1845, and died 29 Jan 1907. The 1860 Census shows fifteen year old John Emanuel SHEAROUSE living in Guyton, Georgia.  He enlisted as a private in Company I,  5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 28 Jul 1863 at Isle of Hope , Georgia. He surrendered under Gen Joseph Johnston at Greensboro, North Carolina  on 26 Apr 1865.  He is buried at Guyton Cemetery in Guyton Ga.  [REC. FAM-B. TUTTLE - GALLANT - MIL REC]

Jonathan SHEAROUSE, son of Emanuel SHEAROUSE and Salome REMSHART, was born on 11 Apr 1824. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 7 Sep 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. He was discharged by virtue of the Conscription Act on 6 May 1862. Jonathan reenlisted in Company A on 1 Nov 1862.  He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was captured at Guyton, Georgia.  He was released on 6 May 1865. He died on 7 Oct 1884, and is buried at Bethel Lutheran Church, Effingham County, Georgia.

Joshua Christopher SHEAROUSE, son of Emanuel SHEAROUSE and Elizabeth MILLER, was born on 12 May 1838. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 17 Sep 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. He was reduced in rank to 3rd sergeant in an election held on 10 Oct 1861. He was later defeated in an election held on 8 May 1862 and assumed the rank of private. He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863.  He was detailed at Union Springs, Alabama, with the Convalescent Horse Camp on 8 Oct 1864. He surrendered under General Sam Jones at Tallahassee, Florida.  He was paroled at Albany, Georgia on 7 May 1865.  He died on 7 Sep 1901, and is buried at Bethel Lutheran Church, Effingham County. Nathaniel Shearouse, son of Emanuel SHEAROUSE and Lydia HEIDT, was born in Effingham County about 1820.  He  is listed in the 1860 Census as being thirty-nine years old  and living in or near Guyton, Georgia. He enlisted as 1st Corporal in Company A,  2nd Battalion, Georgia Calvary on 7 Oct 1861 at Savannah Georgia. He was elected 5th sergeant on 10 Oct 1861. Discharged  6 May 1862.  Enlisted as private in Co I, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry on 28 Aug 1863 at Isle of Hope Georgia. Nathaniel married Sarah E. ARNSDORFF on 21 Jan 1841. Nathaniel died on 05 Aug 1865. He is  Buried in Furns Cemetery located about 2 miles southwest of Bethel Church near Springfield Georgia [REC. James N. SHUPTRINE, son of John E. SHUPTRINE and Christina GNANN, was born in Effingham County, Georgia, on 1 Sep 1844.  Sixteen year old James is found in his father's household in the 1860 Effingham County Census.

Berrien L. SMITH (listed as L. B. SMITH on official record), son of William B. and Mary Ann SMITH, was born 27 Jun 1844, and died 20 Jun 1915. Eight year Berrien is listed in the household  (visit 247) in the 1850 Effingham Census. Fifteen year old Berrien SMITH is  listed in the household of W. B. and M. A. SMITH, in the 1860 Effingham Census. He was enlisted in Company A, 2nd Georgia Battalion at Tybee Island, Georgia. 17 Sep 1861. Transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry 20 Jan 1863. Listed as "sick" at Savannah, Georgia, on Jul thru Oct 1863 Company Muster Rolls. Absent on duty at Camp Walton in Dec 1863.  Assigned courier to Brigade Headquarters in late 1864. Thomas SMITH enlisted as a private on 2 Oct 1863, at Savannah, Georgia. He was enlisted by Captain Henry J. STROBHAR for the duration of the war. From Sept thru Dec 1863 he is listed as "sick" in General Hospital No. 2, Savannah, Georgia. Listed as Absent Without Leave from 12 Aug 1864. Muster Rolls for Dec 1863 and Feb 1864 list him as present. [MIL REC]

James W. SNOOKS enlisted in Company A, Squadron B, Georgia Cavalry on 30 Oct 1861 at Tybee Island, Chatham County, Georgia.  He was 17 years old at the time. Company A, Squadron B which subsequently became Captain Birds Company (Company A), 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion. The muster roll for Nov - Dec 1862, last on file, lists him as present. On 20 Jan 1863 he was transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry. James W. Snooks was shot  though both legs at Noon Day Church on 20 Jun 1864 and was sent to an Atlanta hospital. Roll for Dec 1864 lists him as being detailed as a courier at regimental headquarters. He was discharged on 26 Apr 1865. James W. H. M. STODDARD was enlisted in Company A, 5th Georgia cavalry by Captain WILTBERGER on 19 Feb 1863. He was discharged by order of Confederate State Court Judge HARDIN, 23 Jun 1863. Re-enlisted 13 Oct 1863 in Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry by Captain HENRY J. STROBHAR. He was detailed, by order of General MERCER, to the Signal Corps as a telegraph operator. He appears to have remained in the Signal Corps until the end of the war. [MIL REC]

J. F. SWEAT enlisted in Captain Bird's Company, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 4 Mar 1862, at Tybee Island, Georgia. He transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was detailed to the Engineers Department by order of General Mercer on 22 Aug 1863 and ordered back to Company I by General Beauregard on 1 Jun 1864. A Descriptive List, and Account of Pay and Clothing Ticket describes him as being born in Chatham County, Georgia.  He is listed as being 5 feet and 5 inches tall, having dark hair, blue eyes, dark skin complexion, and being 32 years of age at time slip was filled out on 29 Aug 1863.  Private J. F. SWEAT appears on a register of General Hospital No. 1 (General Hospital, Oglethorpe Barracks), Savannah, Georgia, for disability, on 24 Aug 1864.  He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865.  [MIL REC]

James P. TROWELL enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 24 Oct 1861, at Tybee Island, Georgia. he was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia cavalry on 20 Jan 1863.  He surrendered with his company in Apr 1865. [MIL REC - GALLANT]

Cammel TYSON enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 26 Apr 1862, at Savannah, Georgia.  He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863.  He died of pneumonia and dysentery in the General Hospital at La Grange, Georgia, on 6 Aug 1864. J. T. ULMER 

Jeremiah USHER was born in Effingham County on 11 Sep 1835.  He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 7 Sep 1861.  He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He surrendered in April 1865 with his company. Jeremiah USHER died on 1 Aug 1905.  He is buried at Bethel Lutheran Church, Effingham County. [MIL REC - GALLANT]

James G. WATT enlisted in Company A, 2nd battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 16 Nov 1862 at Savannah, Georgia. he was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia cavalry on 20 Jan 1863.  He was wounded in action at Noon Day Church on 20 June 1864. He was sent to a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He was listed as absent without leave on 20 Dec 1864. [MIL REC - GALLANT]

F. M. WHITE enlisted in Company A, 2nd battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 17 Apr 1862 at Savannah, Georgia. he was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was wounded in action on 20 Jun 1864 at Noon Day Church and was sent to a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He surrendered with his company in Apr 1865 [MIL REC - GALLANT]

George Golphin WILSON, son of John W. Wilson and Susanna RAHN, was born 28 Feb 1837, in Effingham County, GA. Twelve year old George is listed in the household of John and Susannah Wilson, Visit 162, in the 1850 Effingham County census. George G. Wilson enlisted 17 Sep 1861 at Savannah GA in Company A, 2nd Battalion GA Calvary, discharged on 17 June 1862 because of disability. His Disability Certificate lists him as 6 feet and a quarter inch in height with a light complexion, light hair, and blue eyes. His occupation at enlistment was a merchant. On 2 Mar 1863 George Golphin re-enlisted in Company I, 5th GA. Cavalry.  George G. WILSON was listed Absent Without Leave from Nov - Dec 1864. He is found on the rolls of Floyd House Hospital, 27 Oct 1864 with a gun shot to the right foot with the "ball passing between 4 & 5 metatarsal bones." James J. Wilson, son of James W. WILSON and Susanna RAHN, was born in Effingham County, GA, 02 Nov 1823, and died 29 May 1909. Twenty-six year old James WILSON is listed in the household of John and Susannah WILSON, Visit 162, in the 1850 Effingham Cen.  On 13  Nov 1856, he married Julia Pelham GEORGE. He was enlisted in Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry by Captain Henry J. STROBHAR at the Isle of Hope, GA., on 28 July 1863. He served as courier at Brigade Headquarters during 1864. John W. WILSON, son of Henry James WILSON and Francis Ann EDWARDS, was born 12 Oct 1842, and died 29 Sep 1863, at the Medical College Hospital, Savannah, Georgia, of Typhoid Fever. He was enlisted in Company I, 5th Georgia cavalry by Captain Henry J. STROBHAR at the Isle of Hope, GA., on 5 Aug 1863. Seven year old John appears in the household of Henry WILSON, visit 238, in the 1850 Effingham Cen.

Soloman L. WILSON  is listed as a 15 year old in the household of James Elbert WILSON and Lavina GRAHAM in the 1860 Effingham Census. He was enlisted in Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry by Captain Henry J. STROBHAR at the Isle of Hope, Georgia, on 21 Mar 1863. Private S. L. WILSON died at Medical College Hospital, Savannah, Georgia, 26 Jul 1863.  His body was turned over to his parents. [FAM REC - MIL REC - 1860 C EFF]

William Henry WILSON, son of John W. WILSON and Susanna Rahn, was born in Effingham County, on 31 Mar 1839. Twenty-one year old William is found in his mothers household in the 1860 Effingham County Census. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 11 Oct 1861, at Tybee Island, Georgia. He was transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He died 31 Mar 1939, and is buried at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Effingham County. Benjamin Curry WRIGHT, son of Rev. George R. WRIGHT and Elizabeth M. CHARLTON, was born about 1845, in GA. Five year old, Benjamin Curry is listed in the 1850 Census, visit 112, in his fathers household. He is also listed in his fathers household in the 1860 Effingham Census. He was enlisted in Company A, 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion , by by Captain Henry J. STROBHAR at Savannah, Georgia, 9 Jan 1863. Transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He served as orderly at headquarters in mid 1863. Benjamin survived the war and returned to Effingham County, Georgia. [FAM REC - MIL REC -1850 & 1860 C EFF]

John C. WRIGHT, son of Rev. George R. WRIGHT and Elizabeth M. CHARLTON, was born about 1843, in GA. Seven year old, John is listed in the 1850 Cen, visit 112, in his fathers household. He is also listed in his fathers household in the 1860 Effingham Cen. He was enlisted in Company A, 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion, at Savannah, GA. 3 Sep 1861. Transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He was with wagon train escort at the end of the war. He was paroled at Hillsboro, N. C. on 3 May 1865. Cyrus Rufus ZEIGLER, son of Joshua ZEIGLER and Susanna DASHER, was born in Effingham County, Georgia, 28 Nov 1843, and died 10 Oct 1908. Sixteen year old C. R. is found in the household of Joshua ZEIGLER, Visit 309, of the 1860 Effingham County, Georgia Census.  He was enlisted by Captain Henry J. STROBHAR, 1 Apr 1863, in Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry. Joshua Luther ZEIGLER, son of Joshua ZEIGLER and Susanna DASHER, was born in Effingham County, GA., 5 Mar 1845, and died 1 July 1898. Fifteen year old J. L. is found in the household of Joshua ZEIGLER, Visit 309, of the 1860 Effingham County, Georgia, census.  He was born on 20 Sep 1820, and died on 4 Mar 1895, and is buried at Goshen Methodist Church near Rincon, Georgia. He was enlisted by Captain Henry J. STROBHAR, 2 Mar 1863, in Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry.  Records, last on file, indicate he was present Dec 1864. No pension records found. He married Susan H. SHEAROUSE, daughter of William H. SHEAROUSE and Rosanna H. NEASE, in  1866.  Susan was born 1843, and died 1898. There children: Viola L., William J., Preston J., Corley B., and Cora V.

George R. ZIPPERER, son of George Jefferson Zipperer and Cecilia Huncks, enlisted in Company A, 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion, 7 Sep 1861. He was enlisted in Savannah, Georgia, by Captain Edwin Bird, Captain of the Company at that time.  Transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry 20 Jan 1863.  He was with the company at time of surrender and was paroled at Hillsboro, N.C., 3 May 1865. William Josiah ZITTRAUER, son of Gottlieb Israel ZITTRAUER and Margaret GUGEL, was born in Effingham County, Georgia, 10 Sep 1820, and died 4 Mar 1895. Forty-year-old William J. ZITTRAUER is found in the 1860 Effingham Census. Captain Henry J. STROBHAR enlisted W. J. Zittrauer on 1 Aug 1863. At the time of his enlistment, Company I was located at the Isle of Hope, GA.  He is listed as "sick" at Guyton Hospital in Jul - Oct 1863. W. J. is listed as Absent Without Leave from 7 Dec - 31 Dec 1864. In April 1865 he was sent to Greensboro on special detail and was not with the company at surrender.  He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 3 May 1865.  He was born on 20 Sep 1820, and died on 4 March 1895, and is buried at Goshen Methodist Church near Rincon, Georgia.   [MIL REC]
