Captain William BRAILSFORD entered Confederate service as a 1st Lieutenant in the Savannah Mounted Rifles, 7 Jun 1861, at Sunburry, Georgia. On 1 Sep 1861, William succeeded Captain LAMAR as commander. The company was then known as CAPTAIN BRAILSFORD’S COMPANY, 1ST GEORGIA CAVALRY BATTALION. His Sutherland’s Bluff Plantation became headquarters for the Lamar Rangers during the early part of the war. From its vantage point on the Sapelo River, they could observe the Yankee vessels in Doboy and Sapelo Sounds. On 20 Jan 1863, the company became Company H, 5th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Captain Brailsford commanded the unit through some of the wars fiercest fighting. On 6 Sep 1864, while on the Tennessee/Virginia Incursion, Captain Brailsford was captured by Federal Forces near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He was transported to and was confined at Johnson’s Island Ohio Union Prison Camp. He was released on 30 May 1865, and returned to Georgia. [Thomas D. Houston - 1850 McIntosh, 22nd Dist. 1st Lieutenant Alexander (Alex) C. WYLLY entered service as as a 1st Lieutenant in Captain Hopkins' Company in Oct 1861. At reorganization in April 1862, Alex enlisted and was elected 1st Lieutenant in Captain William Brailsford's Company. 1st Lieutenant Wylly transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Sergeant Warren JOHNSON, MD was captured while on picket duty on the Chattahoochee River, on July 9, 1864.
4th Sgt. Alexander D. McINTOSH enlisted in April 1862 in Captain Brailsford’s Mounted Rifles, 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion. He transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on 20 Jan 1863. He was detailed to find horses in 1864, and was cut off from command, which was on a raid in Tennessee at the time. He was in Montgomery County, Georgia at the time of the surrender. Alexander was born 16 Jan 1828, in McIntosh County, Georgia. [GSU-PEN]

Jonathan D. BARNARD enlisted in the 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion on 11 Jul 1862. On 20 Jan 1863, he transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry. Jonathan was wounded in Tennessee in late Oct 1864 and was sent to South Georgia for 60 days on a wounded furlough. He recovered in Mar 1865 and attempted to reach his company. Jonathan was captured by Yankee pickets, but escaped the same night. He was unable to reach his command. He was born in 1844, and died in 1930. Jonathan is buried in the Antioch Baptist Church cemetery in Evans County, Georgia. [ITS]

John H. CANNON enlisted in Captain William Brailsford’s Company of the 1st Georgia Battalion. He transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry on January 20, 1863. His ankle was broken when his horse fell on him near Macon, Georgia in 1864. Private Cannon was surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina, in April 1865. John H. Cannon was born in Georgia on November 25, 1841. [GSU-PEN REC]

Andrew C. CARTER enlisted at Sutherland’s Bluff Plantation in Captain William Brailsford’s Company of the 1st Georgia Battalion on May 19, 1862 He transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry on January 20, 1863. Andrew died of disease, at Savannah, Georgia, on Sept 24, 1863.

James Allen EZELL enlisted in Captain Brailsford's Company on 15 July 1862. He Transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was home at Thomasville, Georgia at the close of the war due to disability. Other records show him on duty south of the Altamaha River at the close of the war. Alexander Baillie KELL was a 3rd Lieutenant in Captain Octavius Caesar HOPKINS’ Company, also known as the McIntosh light Dragoons. At reorganization in May 1862, he enlisted in Captain William Brailsford's Lamar Rangers at Sutherland Bluff, which later mustered in as Company H 5th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry CSA on 20 Jan 1863. Private Kell served with Company H until the end of the war. He died on 30 Sep 1912, aged 84 years. W. H. LUCUS enlisted as a private in Company G, 1st Regiment "Bainbridge Independents", on March 18, 1861. He was mustered out at Augusta, Georgia on. March 18, 1862 . He then enlisted as a private in Captain Brailsford's Company, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry, on May 19, 1862. W. H. Lucus transferred to Company H, 5th Regiment Ga. Cavalry on January 20, 1863. Donald R. McINTOSH enlisted in April 1862 in Captain Brailsford’s Mounted Rifles, 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion. He transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on January 20, 1863. He was captured near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in September 6, 1864. Sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, and was released in June 1865. [GSU-PEN]

Alexander Goodby MIDDLETON He enlisted as a private in Captain Brailsford’s Company of the 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion in 1862, and transferred to Company H (Lamar Rangers) of the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on 20 January 1863. His brothers, Sgt. Francis M. Middleton and Charles Lawson Middleton were also in H Company. His brothers and 1st cousin were in Company K. He and his wives are buried in Hortense Memorial Cemetery in Brantley County Georgia. [FAM - REC - Tommy D. Houston]
Charles Lawson MIDDLETON enlisted in the Confederate Army in September 1861 as a Private in Captain Lamar’s Company of the 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion, at Darien, Georgia. Although the record is incomplete, he does not appear on on any muster rolls for the Lamar Rangers, Company H of the 5th Georgia Cavalry. He died February 2nd, 1909, and is buried at Middleton Memorial Cemetery in Long County Georgia. [FAM - REC - Tommy D. Houston]
Francis M. MIDDLETON enlisted in Captain O. C. Hopkins’ Company on October 31,1861, as 4th Sergeant. He transferred to Company H , 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on 20 January 1863, and served throughout the war in this unit. Surrendered and Paroled at Bentonville, North Carolina May 1865.

Brantley M. TAIT, son of William A. and Catherine Tait, was born in Elbert County, Georgia in 1836. He enlisted as a private in Captain Brailsford's Mounted Rifles, and was transferred to Company B, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 16 May 1863. He was listed as deserted on 23 Jun 1863. Family records indicate he never came back home to his land or to his new bride, Martha Ann who he married one year before enlisting. She remarried in 1870 in Thomas County, Georgia. According to pension records, he was taken from camp at the Isle of Hope, Georgia, to a Confederate Hospital in Savannah, Georgia in July 1863.
