OFFICERS AND STAFF

Captain William Lowndes WALTHOUR  was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in The Liberty Independent Troop, Captain Winn's Company, 1st Georgia, Volunteer Cavalry Battalion on 1 Oct 1861. When Captain Winn resigned in Oct 1861, William was elected captain. The Liberty Independent Troop was designated as Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment by general order # 20 on 20 Jan 1863. Colonel Robert Houstoun Anderson, of Savannah, commanded the regiment. In 1864, when Col Anderson was promoted to Brigadier General, and was given command of a brigade in Major General Joe Wheeler's Cavalry Corps, Army of Tennessee, Captain Walthour became the Inspector General on the Brigade Staff of General R. H. Anderson. He appears to have served in this position until the end of the war. [ MIL REC - HOUSTON]

1st Lieutenant William Augustus FLEMING was elected 1st Lieutenant, Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry on 1 Oct 1861.  The Liberty Independent Troop became  Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. On General Joe Wheeler's 1864 Tennessee raid he was left sick at Columbia, Tennessee, and captured there on 4 Sep 1864.  He was sent to a Union Army Military Prison at Louisville, Kentucky, and transferred to Johnson's Island. William Augustus FLEMING, son of Peter Winn FLEMING and Mitilda LAW, was born in Liberty County, Georgia, on 24 Mar 1830.  He married Addie F. OATMAN in 1867. William Augustus FLEMING was elected Captain of the Liberty Independent Troop, when it reorganized in Jul 1872.  In 1896 he completed his "REMINISCENCES OF THE LIBERTY INDEPENDENT TROOP" [MIL REC - RLIT BY FLEMING - FAM HIS ANCESTRY.COM ]

1st Lieutenant George T. Hendley  was elected 2nd Lieutenant 1 Oct 1861, of the Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry. He was later elected 1st Lieutenant. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863.  He was wounded at Fayetteville, North Carolina, on 13 Mar 1865. [MIL REC]

2nd Lieutenant William M. Stevens  was appointed Sergeant 1 Oct 1861, then elected 2nd Lieutenant in 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. The 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry captured Lt. Willie Stevens  at the Raymond Cay house, Walthourville, Georgia, on 14 Dec 1864. He was released at Fort Delaware, Delaware, on 17 Jun 1865. Lt. Stevens walked home from Richmond, Virginia, after his release. [MIL REC]

1st Sergeant Samuel Law Fleming was appointed 1st Sergeant Liberty Independent Troop, Winn’s Company, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry on 9 Oct 1861.  transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment. Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. The roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave." [MIL REC]

 2nd Sergeant  Edward W. RUSSELL (Ted Russell)  was appointed 2nd Sergeant, Liberty independent Troop, 1st Georgia Battalion Cavalry 22 Oct 1861.  He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863..  was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, in 1865. [MIL REC]

3rd Sergeant  G. Frederick KING enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry, on 17 May 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863.  Sergeant King surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina, in April 1865. [MIL REC]

4th Sergeant Russell WALTHOUR was appointed 4th Sergeant of Captain Winn’s Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry on 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Sergeant Walthour served as Color bearer in 1864. He Saved the Regimental colors and himself by giving the colors to a mounted member of the color guard and then playing dead as union troops passed over him at the Battle of Bear Creek Station, Georgia, on 16 Nov 1864.  [TOMMY HOUSTON - MIL REC NARA MICROFILM INDEX M266 ROLL 7]

Russell WALTHOUR, son of George Washington Walthour and Mary Amelia Ann Russell, was born in Liberty County, Georgia, in 1841, and died in Liberty County, Georgia on November 23, 1878. He married Matilda Olivia Fleming on 19 Dec 1860. She was a daughter of the Hon. William Bennett Fleming.  [TOMMY HOUSTON - MIL REC NARA MICROFILM INDEX M266 ROLL 7]

Sergeant Miles R. MIXON was born, raised and died in Hampton County, South Carolina. His grave marker lists him as "SERG CO G 5 GA CAV."  He died in 1920. [FAM REC - Submitter]

1st Corporal Josiah L. FLEMING  enlisted on 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. He was wounded in one ear near Savannah, Georgia, in December 1864. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave since 26 Nov 1864." He surrendered at Tallahassee,  Florida, on 10 May 1865.  He was paroled at Thomasville, Georgia, 21  May 1865. [MIL REC]

Josiah Law FLEMING, son of Peter Winn FLEMING and Matilda LAW, was born in Liberty County, Georgia, on 25 Mar 1841.  He married Mary Alice MALLARD on 1 Jan 1868.  He died while in Thomasville, Georgia from cancer on 24 May 1891.  He was a farmer. [MIL REC]

John David CAY , son of Raymond CAY and Eliza Ann STETSON, was born in Liberty County on 17 Sep 1840. John David is listed in the 1850 Liberty County Census in the household of Raymond and Eliza CAY. John married Georgia WINN in Liberty County, Georgia, on 4 Jun 1868.  4th Corporal Edward FENNELL was wounded in action at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, and was home on wounded furlough at close of the war.  [MIL REC]

5th Corporal Fleming LAW  was appointed 5th Corporal of Liberty Independent troop on 17 May 1862.  He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.  Corporal Law surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina, in 1865.  [MIL REC]

Corporal James Oglethorpe VARNEDOE transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry 20 Jun 1863. He was listed as Absent Without Leave from December 1, 1864. He returned to duty from 30 days furlough near the close of the war. He was returning to his command when news of the surrender reached him in South Carolina. He was paroled at Macon, Georgia. [MIL REC]

Colonel James Oglethorpe Varnedoe, son of Prof. Samuel McWhir Varnedoe and Caroline Fraser Law, was born in McIntosh County, Georgia, 24 June 1842. He married Harriet Louise Busby in 1864. Charles Atwood ALEXANDER enlisted in Captain Winn’s Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry on 1 Oct 1861, and transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863, and was elected 2nd Lieutenant. He was  transferred to Capt. J. W. McAlpin's Company, Engineer Troops, Company E, 2nd Regiment, Confederate Engineer Troops in 1864. Appointed 1st Lieutenant 8 Mar 1865 to rank from 27 Oct 1864.  He was paroled at Chester, South Carolina, on 5 May 1865. [MIL REC - HOUSTON - FAM REC CHARLES MILLER]

Charles Atwood ALEXANDER, son of Adam Leopold ALEXANDER and Sarah GILBERT, was born in Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia, on 4 Nov 1838. Lieutenant Alexander is the younger brother of General Edward Porter ALEXANDER.  [MIL REC - HOUSTON - FAM REC CHARLES MILLER]

Charles David ANDERSON enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 18 Jul 1862.  On 20 Jan 1863, the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment was formed, and the Liberty Independent Troop became Company G of the Regiment. He served the entire war in this unit and was paroled at Hillsboro N. C. on 3 May 1865.  [OUTTC FAM REC - MIL REC]

Charles David ANDERSON was born in Manassas, Georgia 15 Feb 1836, son of Peter ANDERSON (1799-1884) and Mary LYNN.  On June 9,1857 he married Mary Ann DANIEL (1836-1902) daughter of James Pierce ANDERSON and Elizabeth GLISSON of Tattnall County.  This union produced twelve children, all born in Manassas, Georgia. Clifford W.  ANDERSON enlisted in 1864, in Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry. He remained in camp one day before being promoted to Acting A. D. C for Brigadier General R. H. Anderson. He severed as a courier on the staff of the 5th Georgia Cavalry until the surrender. Clifford W. Anderson was one of those selected to carry cartel of surrender between General Johnston and General Sherman in April 1865. [PEN GSU - MIL REC]

Alfred C. BACON enlisted 16  Jan 1863. Absent, sick in December 1864.  [MIL REC]

William H. BACON enlisted  in April 1863. He was a substitute for John Snyder.  Listed as absent , sick in Dec 1864. [MIL REC]

William S. BAKER enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop on 17 May 1862. He was wounded in Florida on 20 Feb 1864, and at Peachtree Creek, Georgia, and 21 Jul 1864.  He was paroled at Augusta, Georgia, on 5 Jun 1865. [MIL REC]

 F. W. BALDORFF  enlisted  in Captain Winn’s Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Calvary on 1 Oct 1861. He was then appointed Company Commissary.  He transferred to Company G, 5th Regi­ment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863.  Private Baldorff  was wounded in arm at Saltville, Virginia, October 2, 1864.   He was home on sick furlough in December 1864.  [MIL REC]

J. E. BERRY enlisted 19 Apr 1864. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, May 3, 1865.  [MIL REC]

John Isaiah BIRD enlisted on 17 May 1862  in the Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion, Georgia Calvary. Private Bird transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Calvary on 20 Jan 1863.   He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina on 26 Apr 1865.  John Isaiah Bird was born on 27 Sep 1827 and died on 28 Aug 1869.    [MIL REC]

Thomas Butler BLOUNT enlisted  in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862.  Thomas B. Blount transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Calvary on 20 Jan 1863.  Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, May 3, 1865.  [MIL REC]

Jonathan B. BREWTON enlisted  in the Liberty Independent Troop on December 23, 1862. He then transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. Private Brewton was discharged by order of the Secretary of War, Special Orders No. 37, A. & I.O.G., Richmond, Virginia,  13 Feb 1864.  [MIL REC]

T. S. BRADLEY entered service in July 1862, as a substitute for Private J. .S. WILSON of the Liberty Independent Troop. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment. Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He is listed on detail duty 31 Dec 1864. Paroled at Albany, Georgia, May 6. 1865. [MIL REC]

 John Wallace BRUMBY  enlisted  in the Liberty Independent troop on 27 Nov 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry,  20 Jan 1863. He was  elected Captain of Company D, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 26 Sep 1863. He later transferred to Company I, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.  Company Roll dated 27 Feb 1865, shows him "Absent,” by authority of Lt. Gen. Ewell since 1 Nov 1864.  [MIL REC]

Joseph B. CALDWELL  enlisted  in Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 15 Apr 1864. Joseph B. Caldwell was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865.  [MIL REC]

Robert H. CALDWELL  enlisted  in Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry on March 12. 1864.  Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro. North Carolina, on 3 May 1865.  [MIL REC]

Raymond CAY  enlisted  on 26 Jan 1864, at Green Pond, South Carolina.  He escaped capture by Captain Hancock’s Company, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry, at his father’s home in Walthourville, Liberty County, Georgia, in Dec 1864.  Records show he was home on furlough at close of war.  [MIL REC]

O. Devant CHESTER  enlisted  on 1 Jul 1864.   He was struck and bruised by a minnie ball at Aiken, South Carolina. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 3 May  1865. Thirteen O. D. Chester is found in the 1860 Cobb County census, living in the home of his physician father, N. L. Chester. He has an Marietta address. [MIL REC - ITS_p115]

William W. CHISHOLM  enlisted  12 Nov 1863. Private Chisholm was detailed with the Signal Service as telegraph operator, 12 Nov 1863. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 3 May 1865. [MIL REC]

Thomas Carolin CLAY enlisted as a private in Capt. Winn’s Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on June 30, 1862, known as the Liberty Independent Troop.  On December 20, 1862, he was detailed to the Signal Corps, and on January 20, 1863 he was transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.  He was paroled with the Signal Corps at Albany, Georgia on May 6, 1865. Thomas Carolin CLAY was the second son of Thomas Savage CLAY (1801-1849) and Matilda Willis McAllister Clay (1818-1869) of “Richmond,” Bryan County, Georgia.  The Clays were successful rice planters on the Ogeechee River and Thomas Carolin Clay was brought up in a family that valued education and religion.  Thomas Savage Clay was the son of Joseph Clay, Jr., a well-respected jurist and later a Baptist minister.  T. S. Clay was educated at Harvard College and later helped organize the Bryan Neck Presbyterian Church near his plantation in Bryan County.  Matilda Willis McAllister Clay was a daughter of a neighboring planter, George Washington McAllister (1781-1850), and Mary Bowman McAllister.  Her brother, Joseph Longworth McAllister (1820-1864), had Fort McAllister built on his lands at the mouth of the Ogeechee River and served as Lt. Colonel of the Hardwick Rifles, later part of the 7th Regiment of Georgia Cavalry.  McAllister was killed in action against troops commanded by Gen. George A. Custer at Trevilian’s Station, Virginia, on June 11, 1864.   

Thomas Carolin Clay
was educated at “Richmond” by private tutors and then followed his older brother to the Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven, Connecticut from 1855 to 1857, and studied classics under the Rev. Henry Martyn Colton in Middletown, Connecticut.  Thereafter, he entered Yale College as a freshman in the Class of 1864 and joined the Linonian Society.  Georgia seceded from the Union on January 19, 1861, and Thomas Carolin Clay left for Savannah on February 4, 1861.  He never returned to Yale to finish his studies. 
 

 Although his older brother and aunt disapproved of the war, Thomas Carolin Clay enlisted as a private in Capt. Winn’s Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on June 30, 1862, known as the Liberty Independent Troop.  On December 20, 1862, he was detailed to the Signal Corps, and on January 20, 1863 he was transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.  He was paroled with the Signal Corps at Albany, Georgia on May 6, 1865. Thomas Carolin Clay had his own Sharps rifle, which was finely engraved and fitted with target sights, and a standard issue pine army trunk for his belongings as part of his accoutrements. 

Near the height of the war in coastal Georgia on November 1, 1864, Thomas Carolin Clay married Caroline Matilda Law (1842-1909).  She was the daughter of Judge William Law (1793-1874), an ardent Secessionist, and his second wife, Alethea Jones Stark Law (1810-1872).  Ft. McAllister fell in December, 1864 and “Richmond” was burned, forcing the family to flee to south Georgia.  After the war, Thomas Carolin Clay and his family lived in Savannah, Georgia until 1878.  Thereafter, he planted rice at “Richmond” until 1887, when he returned to Savannah to live for the rest of his life.  The story of his life, wartime letters and photographs can be found in Shades of Gray:  The Clay & McAllister Families of Bryan County, Georgia during the Plantation Years

Harrison CLIFTON  enlisted  in Company G, 11th Battalion, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee, C. S. A., Tattnall County, "Tattnall Invincibles" on 4 Mar 1862 . He transferred to Company G, 47th Regiment, Georgia Infantry on 12 May 1862.  On 12 Aug 1862, he transferred  to Captain Abial Winn's Company, 1st Battalion,  Georgia Cavalry.  He transferred with most of his company to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863.  His pension records show he was on detail at the close of the war.  [MIL REC - PEB REC]

John H. CLIFTON enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop  on September 6, 1862. Transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863.  Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865. [MIL REC]

Thomas CLIFTON enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop  17 May 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5thRegiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave since November 26th."  [MIL REC]

John COBB  enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 30 Jun 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Records show him listed as deserted on July 19, 1864.  [MIL REC]

Wesley COBB  enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop  17 May 1862 Transferred to Company G,  5th  Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Private Wesley Cobb was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina. May 3, 1865.  [MIL REC]

Ovid Isaac CULBERSON enlisted  29 Oct 1864, at Conyers, Georgia. Private Culberson was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, May 3, 1865.  He died in 1911, and is buried in Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. [MIL REC]

George Walthour CURTIS  enlisted  22 Jan 1864. Private Curtis was paroled at Salisbury, North Carolina, 1 May 1865. [MIL REC]

Henry DAVIS  enlisted  12 Sep 1863. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent at camp, convalescent horse."  [MIL REC]

Mirarbeau M. DOYLE enlisted  on 15 Apr1864.  Private Doyle was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 3 May 1865. [MIL REC]

 B. F. DYE enlisted  17 May 1862, in Captain Winn’s Company, 1st battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He transferred with most of his company to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Records show he was on detail with Hood's Supply Train 31 Dec 1864.  He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 may 1865. [MIL REC]

Joel EASTERLING entered service as a paid substitute for W. H. HULL in 1863.  Records show he deserted.  [MIL REC]

J. J. EPPINGER  enlisted  18 Mar 1864. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865.  [MIL REC]

S. H. EVANS enlisted  on 12 Mar 1864. He was detailed as a courier for General Hood in 1864. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina. May 3. 1865.  [MIL REC]

John N. FENNELL  enlisted  on 1 Nov 1863, and was accidentally wounded at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, on 19 Jun 1864. [MIL REC] 

John N. FENNELL, son of John W. A. FENNELL,  was born on 26 Sep 1826, in South Carolina.  He was a one time sheriff of Liberty County, farmer, and plantation overseer, He moved to Liberty County with his father as a child.  He married Mary Elizabeth Girardeau on April 13, 1848.  John served briefly in the Liberty Guards, before enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop.  He managed the Montevideo plantation for some years before removing to Savannah.   He died on December 14, 1881 in Savannah, Georgia. James Wilson FLEMING enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop  on 17 May 1862 He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863.  He was paroled at Thomasville, Georgia, on 23 May 1865.  [MIL REC]

John Sidney Fleming  enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop  17 May 1862.  He  transferred to Company G, 5th Georgia cavalry on 20 Jan 1863.  Records show he transferred from Flemstone Hospital, Barnesville, Georgia, to General Hospital at Macon, Georgia, 23 Sep 1864. Thomas Madison FLEMING  in the Liberty Independent troop in November 1861. he transferred to Company G,  5th  Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on  20 Jan 1863. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file. shows him "Absent on special duty, drummer. headquarters."  [MIL REC]

Thomas Quarterman "Que" FLEMING enlisted  in Captain Winn's Company, 1st  Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Thomas Quarterman FLEMING served  as a member of Color Guard.  Records show he was on "Special Detail" at brigade headquarters at the close of the war. Thomas Quarterman "Que" FLEMING,  the son of John Sidney FLEMING and Jane Amarintha QUARTERMAN married Eleanore Eulalie "Lalie" CAY, daughter of Raymond CAY and Eliza Ann STETSON, in Liberty County, Georgia, on 19 Dec 1866.  I. Axon GIRARDEAU was born on 15, Apr 1838. He enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop  on 16 Oct 1862.  Private Girardeau transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. John  J. Axon GIRARDEAU was killed in a rice field near Savannah, Georgia, in 1864.  Fleming reports in his Reminiscences of The Liberty Independent Troop "Near Allendale Private John Girardeau of Co G. was killed while acting as courier for General Anderson." [MIL REC]

Len M. GRIFFIN  was elected 2nd Lieutenant Company G, 1st Regiment, Georgia Infantry, March 18, 1861. Mustered out at Augusta, Georgia, March 18, 1861. He enlisted  in Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 23 Feb 1864.  Private GRIFFIN was captured at Bear Creek Station,  Georgia, on  16 Nov 1864. David C. HILL was born on 31 May 1845 in Stewart County, Georgia. was enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on  1 Aug 1862. He was a substitute for Thomas MANDEVILLE. Private Hill  transferred with most of company to Company G, 5th  Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was on detail at camp for convalescent horses 31 Dec 1864. George Washington HORTON  was born 12 Oct 1810 in Rutherford, North Carolina, and died 26 Jan 1905 in Wayne County, Georgia.  George moved to Brunswick, Georgia as a single man in 1833, and in 1836 began driving the stagecoach between Brunswick, Georgia and Tallahassee, Florida.  He was a driver for several years. In 1839 George married “Appy” Howard and they had eleven children, seventy nine grandchildren, and forty five great grandchildren. George and Appy lived in Gardi until his death. Appy lived several years after George's death. - George and Appy's eleven children were: Henderson, Rufus Daniel, Mary Ann Eliza, Amos Gibson, Robert Stafford, Martha Matilda, Eliza Jane Hester, Thomas B., Francis Benjamin, Alice, and Lanie. Martha Matilda Horton born 5 November 1854 married William Dilworth Middleton born 3 April 1851 ( my great grandparents - Sue Miller). Bayard Hand KING was born in Cobb County, Georgia, on 4 Sep 1846. He enlisted  on 17 Mar 1864, and was captured near Bear Creek Station, Georgia, on 16 Nov 1864.  He was paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland, for 40 days or until exchanged on 16 Mar 1865. He was home on furlough at close of the war. Records show he was residing at Fort Meade, Florida, in Aug 1927. Julian Clarence KING  enlisted  in Captain Winn’s company on 17 May 1862 He was transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Private Clarence King was captured by the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry on 14 Dec 1864 at Walthourville, Liberty County, Georgia.   [MIL REC]

Roswell KING enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 18 Nov 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Records show he surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865. 

James T. LAMBRIGHT  enlisted at the age of 17, as  a private in the Liberty Independent Troop in May 1862, at  Palmyra, near Sunbury, Liberty County. The Independent Troop remained  in that locally guarding the coast from Savannah to  the Altamaha River. In the winter of 1862, the Independent Troop transferred to the vicinity of Fort McAllister, and remained there during the bombardment of the fort by the Federal Ironclads.  The Company was then ordered to Savannah, Georgia, where the Fifth Georgia Cavalry Regiment was formed on January 20, 1863.  The Independent Troop became Company G, of the regiment. Private Lambright surrendered at Company Shops, North Carolina, on April 26, 1865.  He wrote: "After the surrender we started on our return to our homes in Georgia, and after arriving at Augusta we separated in small parties, each selecting the most direct route. I arrived at Tebeauville, Ware county, where our family refugeed, rejoining them after an absence of three years, May 1862 - May 1865." James wrote a history of the Liberty Independent Troop in 1910. Proctor LAWRENCE enlisted  in the Liberty Independent Troop on 19 Oct 1862.  He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on  20 Jan 1863. He received a slight wound to the forehead  near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He was captured near Jonesboro, Georgia, on 16 Nov 1864. He was paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland, and transferred to Cox's Landing, James River, Virginia, for exchange in February 1865. He was born  in Beaufort County, South Carolina., and died in Atlanta, Georgia. [REC - ITS-ODC-113]

John Hand "Skip" LONG  enlisted in Capt Walthour's Company of the First Georgia Cavalry  at the age of 17 years in May 1862. Transferred to Company G of the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment by Special Order No. 20 on 20 January 1863. He was placed on special duty at Brigade Headquarters on 31 Dec 1864 as personal courier for Brigadier General Robert Houstoun Anderson who nicknamed him "Skip"; his horse was named "Andrew Jackson". His fellow troopers have credited John H. Long with “extraordinary daring and unexcelled horsemanship.” Skip was temporarily promoted to Corporal and was wounded but not incapacitated at the Battle of Noon Day Church, Georgia. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina on 3 May 1865.  [MIL REC]

Records show he lost two fingers at Saltville, Virginia, 2 Oct 1864. Dr. Lucius Cornelius MATTOX, son of Elijah MATTOX, was born in Tattnall  County, Georgia, 5 May 1829. He was educated at home and graduated from Eclectric Medical College of Macon, Georgia, on 9 Feb 1851.  He practiced medicine in Clinch County, Georgia, and Madison County, Florida, before and after the Civil war.  He married on 6 Apr 1854, to Miss Sarah A. SHINOLSER of Macon, Georgia,  and they had 6 children. Dr. Lucius Cornelius Mattox is known as Clinch County’s first resident physician.  He practiced medicine for 50 years. Michael McKenzie MATTOX, enlisted  in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862, and was transferred to Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863.  As a member of Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry, Michael McKenzie Mattox rode a black mare named "Dixie" all through the war; Dixie brought him home again after the war and then dropped dead.  Mattox wasn't wounded. In addition to being a soldier, Michael McKenzie Mattox was a Primitive Baptist Elder in his later years, his greatest theme in preaching being the suffering and death of Christ, which he could portray with zeal and energy. MICHAEL MCKENZIE MATTOX, son of MICHAEL MCKENZIE MATTOX & MARY ELIZA LINDER, was born January 1, 1840, in Bryan County, Georgia and died September 6, 1913 likely in Bulloch County, Georgia, where he had moved after the death of his wife. He is buried at Beard's Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Glennville, Tattnall County, Georgia. He married REBECCA ELIZABETH HILL July 7, 1861.  Children of MICHAEL MCKENZIE MATTOX and REBECCA ELIZABETH HILL are:  Laura A. Mattox, b. 1863; Mary Mattox, b. 1865; Elizabeth Mattox, b. February 7, 1869; Caroline Bell Mattox ("Carrie"), b. January 27, 1871;Theophilus Walton Mattox, b. May 28, 1872; Michael M. Mattox ("Kennie"), b. July 12, 1874; Viola V.  Mattox, b. June 27, 1876; Annie Claire Mattox, b. July 8, 1879; Lilly D. Mattox (twin), b. September 1, 1880; and Daisy B. Mattox (twin), b. James Newton RUSSELL, son of Edward William RUSSELL, was born in Walthourville, Georgia, on 10 Oct 1830. On 10 Jan 1854, he married Mary H. EVE.  On 17 Nov 1874, he married Anna H. Edward Jonathan THOMAS, son of John Abbott THOMAS  and Malvina Huguenin, was born in Savannah, Georgia, on 25 Mar 1840. He attended and graduated (1860) from Franklin College at Athens, Georgia.   On 2 Apr 1862 he married Alice Gertrude WALTHOUR, daughter of George Washington WALTHOUR and Mary Amelia Ann RUSSELL. After the war, he resided in Savannah where he worked in railroads and was a civil engineer for the Savannah street car system. He was the Chatham county surveyor for 6 years. His seven children were: Abbot,  Walthour, Julia, Alice, Edward J. Jr., Huguenin, Dr. Marion R. THOMAS. He died 8 Aug 1929 and is buried in Bonaventure Cemetery. William J. WAY enlisted  in Captain Winn’s Company on 10 Nov 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment. Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Discharged because of disability 30 May 1863. [MIL REC]

 A. J.  WILLIAMS  enlisted  on 1 Jul 1863, in Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry. The Company Roll dated 1 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him Absent Without Leave since 26 Nov 1864.  [MIL REC]

Floyd WILLIAMS enlisted  in the Liberty Independent Troop on September 2, 1862.  He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Pension records show that he was sent home on 30 days furlough on account of fever in November 1864. His furlough was extended 60 days. He was unable to rejoin his command before it surrendered.  He died in Tattnall County, Georgia, in 1920. [MIL REC]

Francis William WILLIS  enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop  on 20 Jun 1862. He was detailed in Signal Corps December 20, 1862.   He transferred to Company G, 5th Georgia cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, May 3, 1865. [MIL REC]

 Walter A. WILLIS 

William Maxwell WINN escaped capture when Lieutenant Stevens' detail was captured 14 Dec 1864.  Lt. Stevens and several troops from Company G were captured at the Cay house, Walthourville, Georgia, on 14 Dec 1864, by the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry.  [MIL REC - ITS]

Y. H. WYNN

 Redden YEOMANS, Jr.  enlisted  in the Liberty Independent Troop on 19 July 1862. Redden transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Roll from 30 Jun to 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave since October." No later record.  [OUTTC - FAM] 

Redden YEOMANS, Jr., son of Redden YEOMANS and Lucy JARRIEL, was born 26 Mar 1829. He married Elizabeth DANIEL, daughter of  James P. DANIEL and Elizabeth GLISSON.  The Redden Yeomans family lived in Tattnall County, Georgia, near where Pine Grove Church is located today.  Elizabeth died on 24 Dec 1895 and Redden died on 17 Dec 1905.  They are buried in Cedar Creek Cemetery, Tattnall County, Georgia.
