1st Lieutenant William Perry ROUNTREE   enlisted as a Private in Company C (Bulloch Troops), 2nd Battalion Georgia Cavalry, on 2 November 1861. Private Rountree was appointed to the rank of 2nd  Sergeant on 22 March 1862 and to 1st Sergeant on 9 May 1862. 1st Sergeant Rountree transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry, on 20 January 1863, and was elected 3rd Lieutenant, Jr.  His records show him as 2nd Lieutenant, Jr. in March 1863.  In 1864 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry. 1st Lieutenant Thomas J. EVANS  [NPS SOLDIERS AND SAILORS DATABASE]

Thomas Jefferson EVANS, son of Hezekiah EVANS and Sarah MOORE, was born April 13, 1834, in Screven County, Georgia. Thomas died on August 3, 1863, and is buried in the Evans Family Cemetery, Screven County, Georgia. [ANCESTRY.COM]

2nd Lieutenant William Michael HENDERSON  enlisted as a Private in the Bulloch Troop in late 1861. The Bulloch Troop became Company C  2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion in 1862 and later Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry. On or about 20 Jan 1863, William was appointed 2nd Sergeant.  Records show he served as acting Regimental Color-bearer. During the time he was serving as acting Color-bearer  2nd Sergeant  Henderson was appointed 2nd Lieutenant for "Brilliant and conspicuous bravery on the field of battle."   During the Battle of Waynesboro, Georgia, Sergeant Henderson dismounted the Adjutant of the 9th Michigan Cavalry with the staff of the Regimental flag, and captured him.  William Michael Henderson was call "Captain" by his friends and family after the war.

WILLIAM MICHAEL HENDERSON, son of WILLIAM MICHAEL HENDERSON & MARY ANN YOUNG, was born in Screven County, Georgia, 28 Feb 1843. "Captain" Henderson married Cynthia Anne Gray BROWN, daughter of William Merritt BROWN & Amanda Ann GRAY. Cynthia was born 26 JAN 1844 in Crawford County, Georgia. Captain Henderson died on 17 April 1932.

ELI WASHINGTON HODGES, son of HARDY BELL HODGES Margaret Bird KENNEDY, was born in Georgia in 22 July 1840. Eli and his brother, WILLIAM ASBURY HODGES, also of the Company E, are listed in the household of their father HARDY B. HODGES in the 1860 Bulloch County, Georgia, Census.  On 10 Dec 1869, he married MARY LOUISE "ANNIS" KELLER. Eli  died 31 Jul 1919 in Bulloch County, Georgia.  Eli & Annis had the following children: 1. William Hardy Hodges, 2. Stephen Keller Hodges, 3. Maude L. Hodges, 4. Hardy "Eugene" Hodges,  5. John Grimes Hodges, 6. Maybell Annis Hodges, & 7. Rex Hodges. Eli & Annis are buried in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Bulloch  [ANCESTRY.COM - SMITH BANKS]

1st Sergeant Samuel  J. WILLIAMS [NPS SOLDIERS AND SAILORS DATABASE]

2nd Sergeant Gideon Hayes BROWN enlisted as a private in Company C, 2nd Georgia Cavalry  Battalion, on 2 Nov 1861.  Company C was also known as the “Bulloch troop” or Captain Best’s Company.  On 20 Jan 20, 1863, he transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry, as a 4th Sergeant.  By July 1863 he had been promoted to 3rd Sergeant, the rank he held until June 1864, when he was listed as 2nd Sergeant.  He participated in all the major battles of the 5th Georgia Regiment.  In his own words he stated: “ Our Regiment did coast duty until the summer of 1864 when we went to Johnston’s Army at Kennesaw Mountain, Saltville, Virginia, Noonday Church, Newnan, Philpots Ferry, Bear Creek station, Waynesboro, and you might say a continued skirmish from the time we left Atlanta to the Surrender.”  His name appeared on a muster roll as “present” on 28 Apr 1865.  2nd Sergeant BROWN was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865.

Gideon Hayes BROWN , son of Jesse BROWN and Mary DECKLE, was born 16 Apr 1834. Sixteen year old Gideon is found in his father's household in the 1850 Emanuel County Census. He married Matilda "Tilda" COLEMAN in Emanuel County, on 4 May 1868. Gideon died 28 Feb 1905, at Canoochee, Georgia.  He and his wife are buried at Hawhammock Baptist Church Cemetery in Emanuel County, Georgia. 2nd Sergeant Jason Burrel BRINSON enlisted in Captain Hendry's Company on 10 Oct 1861 in Savannah, Georgia. Jason was appointed 2nd corporal when the company was reorganized on 9 May 1862. The company muster roll for Sep – Oct 1862, last on file for Company C, 2nd Battalion Georgia Cavalry, lists him as present.  Corporal Brinson transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He was appointed 2nd Sergeant. He was wounded, date and place not known at this time.  Muster for 31 Dec 1864, lists him as absent wounded at Gainesville, Georgia. Jason Burrell BRINSON, son of Adam B BRINSON and Susan FAIRCLOTH,  was born 2 Oct 1843.  He married Nannie C. Lewis in Decatur County, Georgia, on 24 Dec 1868. The 1880 census lists William H. (son), Jason B. (son), Gordon W. (son), Fanny S. (daughter), & Waverly L. (son).  Family lore has J. B. returning from the Civil War to his home in Southwest Georgia, where he shot and killed a Carpetbagger. It appears the Carpetbagger rode up to the family home and demanded the family to move out as he had purchased the property, possibly for back taxes.  J. B. simply pulled his service revolver and shot the man from his horse. Realizing the severity of his actions, the family collected what funds they could from friends and relatives and J. Sergeant Frances Marion MILLER [NPS SOLDIERS AND SAILORS DATABASE]

Francis Marion MILLER was born in 1843 in Bulloch County, Georgia. He was a son of John Roberts and Nancy LANIER MILLER. He died in the at the Chattahoochee River near Atlanta, Georgia. [FAM SANDI HAM]

Sergeant E. M. KENNEDY [NPS SOLDIERS AND SAILORS DATABASE]

Sergeant James Emmett COLEMAN  enlisted, as a private, in Company C, "BULLOCH TROOPS", 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion on 2 Nov 1861, in Savannah, Georgia. James Emmett transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry,  20 Jan 1863. He was promoted to 3rd Corporal, Jan 1863, 1st Corporal in Dec 1864, and later to Sergeant (other records only show him as 1st Corporal).  He was paroled on  26 Apr 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina. 

Sergeant William Asbury HODGES was wounded at the Battle of Aiken, South Carolina, in 1864, and spent a month in a hospital at Augusta, Georgia. [MIL MEM GA 1895]

Allen ASPINWALL, born 22 Sep 1823 and died 3 Jun 1877.  He was the son of Elijah ASPINWALL and Barbara Dickson.  He married Elizabeth Olliff on 22 Nov 1849.  Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Olliff and Rebecca Donaldson.  She was born 2 May 1824 and died about 1898. George R. BEASLEY enlisted in Company C, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 10 Oct 1861 at Savannah, Georgia. George was discharged on 17 Jan 1862, and He enlisted in Company B, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 23 Sep 1862. On 20 Jan 1863 he was transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry. Roll for 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him present.  Pension records show he was sent to Savannah, Georgia on detached service Mar 1865, and was paroled there Apr 1865. Born in Baker County, Georgia in 1845. Died in Alfred Hospital at Bainbridge, Georgia 20 Oct 1918, and is buried in the Brinson Family Cemetery, Decatur County, Georgia. Peyton Glen BRINSON, son of Adam B BRINSON and Susan FAIRCLOTH,  was born was born 26 JUL 1845 in Dougherty County, Georgia, and died 20 Oct 1918 in Seminole County, Georgia. He was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Brinson, Georgia. He married Queen Anne PARRAMORE 12 Feb 1871 in Jackson County, Florida. She was born 1 Feb 1853, and died 23 Jul 1881. He married Nora C SHEFFIELD 19 APR 1883 in Bainbridge, Decatur County, Georgia. She died 17 DEC 1866. She was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Brinson, Georgia. He married Elizabeth "Eliza" SMITH 30 Aug 1888. She was born 23 Oct 1864, and died 3 Nov 1959. She was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Brinson, Georgia. He married Sarah E "Sallie" SMITH 13 Nov 1867, daughter of Jackson SMITH and Sarah BURTON. She was born 3 Mar 1847 in Schley County, Georgia, and died 3 Nov 1874 in Decatur County, Georgia. He married Hattie E RUSSELL 18 Apr 1875 in Decatur County, Georgia. She was born 1857, and died 1883. He married Margaret HERRING 11 Mar 1885. Simeon was a member of Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry. Joseph Warren COWART, son of Augustus Miles COWART and Mary “Polly” PARRISH,  was born September 13, 1841 in Summit, Emanuel County, Georgia, and died July 12, 1922.  He married SARAH J. OVERSTREET April 05, 1867. Joseph Warren was sheriff of Emanuel County from 1873 – 1875.  He was Emanuel County Treasurer from 1900 – 1902. Zachariah "ZACH" COWART enlisted in Captain Best's Company, 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion, November 5, 1861. He transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, May 3, 1865. 

Zach COWART, son of  Augustus Miles COWART and Mary "Polly" PARRISH, was born 26 Oct, 1843 in Emanuel County, Georgia, and died 15 Jun 1915 in Emanuel County, Georgia. Seven year old Hezekiah  is found living in his fathers household in the 1850 Emanuel County Census.  He married Mary Ann "Mollie" OVERSTREET on 30 Nov 1865.  They had nine children. He was an Elder in the Primitive Baptist Church, and was the first pastor of the Summit Baptist Church in Summit, Georgia.  This church later became the First Baptist Church of Twin City, Georgia. Bryant DAUGHTRY enlisted in Company C, 2nd Georgia Battalion on 15 May 1862. Bryant was mustered in by Captain Best at Camp Rose, near Savannah, Georgia. The company muster roll for Sep – Oct 1862, last on file, lists him as present. On 20 Jan 1863, Bryant transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry, by consolidation of the first and second Battalions of cavalry. Muster Roll for May – June 1864 lists him as absent sick in General Hospital at Atlanta, Georgia, since 13 June 1864. Bryant Daughtry is listed as a member of Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry in the Index To Civil War Confederate Pension Files, as a witness for Richard Edenfield of Emanuel County, Georgia. Robert William DeLOACH enlisted in the Bulloch Troops in Oct 1861. In early 1862 the  Bulloch Troops became Company C, 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion.  Robert  transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He surrendered with Gen. Col Rockwell, on 2 Nov 1861 The company muster roll for Sep – Oct 1862, last on file, lists him as present. On 20 Jan 1863 he was transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry. Ephraim H. EDENFIELD, son of  Richard Edenfield and Elizabeth Ann Herrington, was born in Emanuel County in 1831. Ephraim  married Jane Kimbrell on 6 Jan 1867. Ephraim died in 1880 and is buried at Upper Mills Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, between Metter and Statesboro, Bulloch County, Georgia. Children of Ephraim and Jane are: Cornelia E. Richard  EDENFIELD, Jr. [NPS SOLDIERS AND SAILORS DATABASE]

Richard Edenfield Jr., son of RICHARD EDENFIELD & Elizabeth Ann Herrington, was born 19 Feb 1833, in Emanuel County, Georgia. Richard married Jane Elizabeth Slater on 2 Nov 1854 in Bulloch County, Georgia. Richard died 11 Feb 1919. He is buried at the Stillmore City Cemetery, Stillmore, Georgia. Charlton GAY enlisted in the Bulloch Troop on 9 May 1862 in Savannah, Georgia. On 20 Jan 1863, he transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry. Carlton was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina on 3 May 1865.

Charlton GAY , son of Ablsolum GAY and Mary Ann WIGGINS, was born 17 Nov 1837 in Emanuel County, Georgia, and died 10 Jan 1929 in Emanuel County, Georgia.  He married MARTHA FRANCES NEWTON 07 Mar 1867 in Emanuel County, Georgia.  Charlton Gay received the Southern Cross of Honor in 1914 from the Bulloch County Chapter #1498. John Wesley GAY He enlisted in the Bulloch Troop on 24 Oct 1861 in Savannah, Georgia. On 20 Jan 1863 he transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry. He was paroled on 3 May 1865, at Hillsboro, North Carolina.

John Wesley GAY, son of Ablsolum GAY and Mary Ann WIGGINS, was born 17 Mar 1840 in Bulloch County, Georgia, and died 01 Jan 1916 in Bryan County, Georgia. He married SELETA ANN CHURCHILL LANIER Abt. 1864, daughter of THOMAS LANIER and FRANCES NEWTON.  She was born 29 Sep 1844 in Bulloch County, Georgia, and died 24 Sep 1927 in Bryan County, Georgia.  He and Seleta Ann had ten children. Matthew Marin GAY enlisted in Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 1 Aug 1863 at Macon, Georgia.  He was reported as AWOL since 1 Sep 1864 and was listed on the roll of prisoners of war, belonging to the Confederate Army.  He was paroled at Augusta, Georgia on 24 May 1865. 

Matthew Marin Gay,  son of Ablsolum GAY and Mary Ann WIGGINS, was born May 1838 in Emanuel County, Georgia, and died 21 Mar 1890 in Emanuel  County, Georgia.   He married SUSANNAH JOHNSON 15 Dec 1859 in Emanuel County, Georgia, daughter of JAROT JOHNSON and CHARLOTTE.  He and Susannah had eight children. James Bulloch GROOVER

James BULLOCH GROOVER, son of John GROOVER and Sarah BOWEN, was born in Bulloch County, Georgia, on 27 Feb 1838. He married Sarah Ann WILSON on 7 Sep 1864. She is the daughter of Jasper WILSON and Sara Elizabeth LEE.

John E. GROOVER enlisted in the Bulloch Troop on 1 Mar 1862 at Isle of Hope, near Savannah, Georgia. The muster roll for Sep - Oct 1862, last on file, shows him present. He transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863, and the muster roll for May - Jun 1864 lists him as Major Davant's orderly. In Oct 1864 he had a severe case of the mumps, but was able to returned to his command near Macon, Ga. in Nov 1864. He attempted to stay in the field with his troop, but was unable to ride on horseback by reason of the effect of said mumps, he was relieved from duty in Dec 1864, at #9 and ½ (Midville) on the Central R. John E. GROOVER, son of John GROOVER and Sarah BOWEN, was born in Bulloch County, Georgia, on 20 Nov 1840. He married Elizabeth BLAND, daughter of Daniel BLAND and Jincy PARRISH, on 31 Aug 1864. Both John E. and his brother, James Bulloch GROOVER (also of the Bulloch Troop), are the Grandson’s of Rev. William Groover who was the minister at the Lower Lotts Creek Baptist Church in Bulloch County.  The Rev. His disability certificate lists him as twenty four years of age. He was born in Emanuel County, and is listed as five feet seven inches tall, of dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair. Michael "Mike" H. Parrish enlisted in Troop C, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 17 May 1862. On January 20th 1863 the 1st and 2nd Georgia Calvary consolidated forming the 5th Georgia Calvary. Troop C became Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry. Michael was killed on 2 Oct 1864 in Action in Saltville, Virginia defending the Confederacy's salt and lead mines. COLEN (CALVIN?) C. WORDLY was born in South Carolina ca. 1835. He married REBECCA A. E. McELVEEN DELOACH ca. 1865. Rebecca was the widow of GEORGE WASHINGTON DELOACH.
