Joseph “Joe”
Israel Daniel, forth child of
Captain Enoch
and Anna Eliza Bird Daniel,
was born at Taylors Creek, Georgia on October 1, 1842. He attended
Emory College at Oxford, Georgia where he was preparing to become a
doctor; but, before reaching this goal, he was called into Confederate
service.
Joe joined Captain William Hughes’ cavalry company,
the “Liberty Guards” which became Company B, 1st Battalion
Georgia Cavalry. He served with the unit in picketing along the coast.
In 1863 the unit became Company D, 5th Georgia Cavalry. After
forays into South Carolina and Florida, the regiment was called to
Atlanta to join Major General Wheeler’s Cavalry Corps.
In June 1864 the “Guards” saw action at the Battle of
Noonday Church. The “Guards” was pretty well shot up and Private Daniel
was wounded in the hip. His jacket is preserved in the Midway Museum at
Midway, Georgia. Joe survived the wound and was paroled at Savannah on
May 5, 1865.
In his later years, his mode of transportation was a
black buggy with his trusted steed, “Old Gray.” His other companion was
his birddog named Kermit. He died on April 23, 1923 and is buried in the
Taylors Creek Cemetery.
Note: Joe’s father,
Enoch Daniel, organized the Liberty Guards in 1845 and was

Jesse
Abraham DeLOACH,
son of Ephriam DeLoach
and Sarah Durrance,
was born in Tattnall County, Georgia on 12 Mar 1816. He married
Elizabeth Eleanor Smith (1824-1880). She was the daughter of
William T. Smith and Rebecca T. (Newmans) Smith of the
Antioch Community in Tattnall County. The Smith men that served in Troop
D of the 5th Georgia Cavalry were her cousins. Jesse and Elizabeth owned
590 acres on Big Bull Creek that he bought in 1852.
In 1861 Jesse rode to Hinesville where he enlisted in the
Liberty Independent Company known as the "Liberty Mounted Guards". This
unit became Troop D of the 5th Georgia Cavalry on January 20, 1863. He
served on sentry duty near Sunbury and at Fort McAllister in 1862 and
part of 1863. As salt was in short supply the soldiers would distill sea
water to obtain the salt. This process was usually done at night on the
beach as Yankee boats patrolled the coast. One night their fire was
spotted and they were fired upon. A Yankee bullet pierced a copper pot
owned by Jesse, which is in the possession of H. Ray DeLoach of
Savannah. Ray is his great great great grandson.
In Volume Seven of "Men of Mark in Georgia" it is
stated that Jesse DeLoach "served under both General Johnston and
General Hood in the Atlanta Campaign" and saw action in both North and
South Carolina.
Jesse DeLoach was part of a group of men from Tattnall/Liberty County
that swore an oath in 1862 to not shave their beards until the
Confederacy had won the war. The Smith families were part of this group,
also. Jesse DeLoach died in Tattnall County on April 15, 1874 with a
long beard.
In late 1864, while Jesse was serving with the 5th Georgia, Sherman's
men passed through Tattnall County on their "March To The Sea". Riders
had warned the farms in the path of their approach. His sons, Henry age
13, George Wesley age 10, Elec age 9, and Manning age 8 took the cows
and horses to hide them in the woods. Meanwhile, their mother and
sister, Maryann age 12, hid silverware and food stuffs. The boys left a
mare with a new colt in the barn as they had all they could manage and
did not expect the soldiers to bother a newly delivered colt. After
looting the house, the soldiers threw a rope around the neck of the
mare, mounted their horses and proceeded down the dirt road. The last
that was seen of the new colt, it was running down the road after the
mare.
William Shelton DELK was born in Liberty County Georgia 12 Jun 1846,
