OFFICERS AND STAFF

Captain Richard F. AIKIN was Captain of the Chatham Guerillas in Jun 1861. The Chatham Guerillas reorganized as the Chatham Light Horse on 10 Feb 1862. This company was sometimes called the Chatham Light Dragoons. The Chatham Light Horse became Company B, 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on 20 Jan 1863. Captain Aikin was wounded at Cedar Creek, near Jacksonville, Georgia. Richard F. Aikin was Clerk of the Savannah City Council in 1852. 1st Lieutenant Sidney P. GORDON enlisted as a in Company B,  8th Regiment "Oglethorpe Light Infantry" on 21 May 21, 1861. He transferred and was elected Elected 2d Lieutenant in the Chatham Light Horse on 24  Mar 1862. He was later elected 1st Lieutenant. Joseph W. ALEXANDER enlisted as a private in the  2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 10 Jun 1862. He transferred to Company B, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. On 21 Feb 1863 he transferred to and was elected 2nd Lieutenant of Company K, 22nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry. He was elected 1st Lieutenant on 18 Jul 1863. Lieutenant ALEXANDER was captured at Wilderness, Virginia, 10 May 1864.  He was released at Fort Delaware, Delaware, on 10 May 1865. [HEN]

ELISHA M. BLITCH was born 1845 in Georgia.  He married MARTHA PENELOPE BLITCH, daughter of HENRY BLITCH and LAVANIA ENGLISH.  She was born 24 January 1851 in Georgia, and died 19 July 1925. Elisha is listed in the 1870 Bryon County, Georgia Census as head of household of seven children. He was a farmer. [ FAM Maureen McCarthy]

John W. EDWARDS enlisted in the Chatham Light Horse, 2nd Battalion., Georgia Cavalry on 17 Feb 1862 at Savannah, Georgia. He transferred to Company B, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was appointed cook in Jan 1864. The roll for June, 1864 listed him as being absent, sick in the rear hospital. He died at Guyton General Hospital at Guyton, Georgia on 15 Nov 1864 from disease. Andrew Jackson ENGLISH  was born in 1840 in Bryan County, Georgia, the son of Ruben and Eliza SHUMAN ENGLISH.  Andrew was twenty-two years old when he enlisted in the Chatham Light Horse.  He married 10 Aug 1865, in Bryan County, Georgia, Susannah GIBSON who was born in 1836, the daughter of John White  & Clarissa DENMARK GIBSON. Joseph ENGLISH was born in Bryan County in 1841, the son of Ruben and Eliza Shuman English.  He enlisted in the Chatham Light Horse at the age of twenty. The muster roll for Dec 1862, last on file, lists him as present. On 20 Jan 1863, he was transferred to Company B, 5th Georgia Cavalry. He married first, Mrs. Charlotte ELLARBEE LANIER, the widow of a Confederate soldier, by whom he had two children.  He was a life long Methodist and gave land for the construction of Ellabell Methodist Church, Bryan County.  He was a farmer, miller, and a Mason.  He married second on 20 Jan 1887, his former wife's sister, Mrs. Clementine ELLARBEE ENGLISH, by whom he had no children. Both of his wives were the daughters of Allen and Mary Ann (or Polly Ann) ELLARBEE. On his deathbed, he relived parts of the Atlanta campaign. Leonard E. HEIDT enlisted in Company B, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. He enlisted in Company I, 22nd Battalion, Georgia Heavy Art. on 11 may 1864, at Macon, Georgia. John Miles HURST enlisted in Captain Brailsford's Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 19 May 1862. Captain Brailsford's Company was re-designated Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He transferred to Company B, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 16 May 1863. Pension records indicate he was surrendered at Tallassee, Florida on 10 May 1865 and paroled at Thomasville, Georgia on 10 May 1865.
