Chaplain D. H. PORTER
 

Brigadier General Robert Houstoun ANDERSON  resigned his commission as a second lieutenant with the 9th U.S. Infantry on 17 May 1861, and entered the Confederate Artillery as a 1st Lieutenant. He was promoted to Major in September 1861, and named Acting Adj. Gen. of troops on the Georgia coast.  This was a staff position on the staff of General William H. T. Walker. He commanded the 1st Georgia Sharpshooters Battalion in 1862, and  served at Fort McAllister before becoming Colonel of the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on 20 Jan 1863. In 1864 he was promoted to Brigadier General, commanding  Anderson's Brigade, Allen's Division, Wheeler's Cavalry Corps, Army of Tennessee. The 5th Georgia Cavalry served in General Anderson's brigade.

 

Colonel Edward Bird entered Confederate service in April 1861 as Captain of Company A, Squadron B, Georgia Cavalry.  The company subsequently became Captain Bird’s Mounted Company, 2nd Battalion Georgia Cavalry (Dec 1861), and then Company A, 2nd Battalion Georgia Cavalry. Captain Bird was promoted to Lt. Colonel on 17 May 1862, and took command of the 2nd Battalion.  Lt. Colonel Bird transferred to  5th Regiment, Georgia Calvary on 20 Jan 1863, and was promoted to Colonel in the fall of 1864. He was placed in command of the 5th Georgia Cavalry, where he remained until the surrender at Greensboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard J. DAVANT   enlisted as 1st Lieutenant of the Georgia Hussars in 1861.  He was appointed acting Adjutant of Company B, Squadron B on 5 Dec 1861. Company B, Squadron B subsequently became Company D, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He was promoted to Major and assigned to the Field and Staff as Adjutant on 17 May 1862. He served on the Board of Examiners in Savannah for most of 1862. This detail  by order 187 of General Mercer. He transferred to Field and Staff of the 5th Georgia Cavalry in Jan 1863. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 26 Jul 1864.


Captain George S. BARTHELMESS, ACSenlisted in the Effingham Hussars in 1862. He transferred to Company I, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was later promoted to Captain and assigned to Colonel Anderson's staff as ADC. He surrendered with his command at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865. 
A marriage license was issued to George S. BARTHELMESS and Jeanie E. S. FERGUSON on 31 Oct 1865 and according to pension records they where married on 4 Nov 1865. George died 13 Nov 1897 at Savannah, Georgia.  [PEN REC GC]

Paul Marlow EDWARDS enlisted in Company A, 2nd Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 11 Mar 1862, at Savannah, Georgia. He transferred to Company I, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He served for a time as courier for Colonel James Bird. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865. SEE COMPANY G. [MIL REC – GALLANT - FAM 1995]

Dr. John Theodore McFARLAND entered Confederate service as a 1st Lieutenant in the 2nd Republican Blues, Chatham County, on 31 May 1861. On 5 Jun 1861 he was appointed Assistant Surgeon of the 8th Regiment Georgia Infantry. He resigned 28 Oct 1861. Appointed Assistant Surgeon, C. S. A., and ordered to report to 1st Georgia Volunteers (Olmstead's) and was the surgeon at Ft. Pulaski, Georgia when the fort was surrendered on 11 Apr 1862. Dr. McFarland was transported to prison at Ft. Columbus on Governor's Island in New York Harbor. After his return to Savannah in Aug or Sep 1862, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, Georgia Sharpshooters. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon of the 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry in early 1863, and  Surgeon 1 Jun 1864. Records show him on detached duty at Columbus, Georgia hospital 19 Sep 1864. No later record. Before appointment to the 5th Georgia Cavalry, he saw action at 1st Manassas, Virginia, and he surrendered at Fort Pulaski, when that fort was taken by union forces on 11 Apr 1862. 

Dr. Nicholas P. MARLOW, Assistant Surgeon.

Chaplain D. H. PORTER was pastor to the First Presbyterian Church of Savannah, Georgia. During the summer of 1861, he began preaching to the Confederate garrison at Fort Pulaski and in the fall of 1863, Porter became chaplain of the 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, retaining this position until the war’s end. David H. PORTER, son of Francis H. PORTER, was born in Selma, Alabama in 1830.
